This will be a general purpose thread for F1 news and pings that really don't require a thread of their own.

Mario Andretti made headlines late last week when he announced that his son, Michael, intended to field a Formula 1 team in 2024. Michael Andretti, a former F1 driver and owner of IndyCar powerhouse Andretti Autosport, seemed to be quite serious. His father noted the entry “has the resources and checks every box,” and today, that serious tone was taken up a notch.
In an interview with motorsports reporter David Land, Mario Andretti said that the team not only has vital resources prepared and people ready to go, but also that an engine supplier is in the bag. “We have a formal agreement, now, and [an] engine supplier. It’s going to be Renault, I’m allowed to say it now.”
We’ve reached out to the Alpine F1 team—which was re-branded from Renault last season—to confirm this. However, hearing it from Andretti himself is certainly something. The former F1 world champion notes that this shouldn’t upset too many other current outfits, either. As it stands, the plurality of F1 teams are Mercedes-powered, and if Andretti chose Ferrari as its engine supplier, it may create a power struggle between the teams. Renault, however, only supplies engines for its in-house Alpine team after it lost Red Bull to Honda in 2019, and then lost Mclaren to Mercedes in 2020.

‘porpoising’ is back in fashion in F1, having been largely missing from the vocabulary for the last 40 years
How was Michael’s record compared to his fathers? I am not fami, familiar, with Mike’s career much.
in F1? none... he did basically nothing, he scored 7pts
Oh OK. There’s an Andretti racing now? He’s not doing so good as I recall? Seems he’s always getting in wrecks. Not sure if it’s f-1 or indy, I think f-1
none in F1
the only Indy race i watch is the 500 so i really don’t know any of the drivers except the ringers or cameos like Alonzo etc. who pop up time to time but i do not follow the series after they went to the semi-full body, i was done
what was it before the semi-full body? I’m kinda new to indy so not familiar with the vehicles- I’m just watching it because jimmy johnson is giving it a go- I’m curious if he can run with the big dogs some day- So far he’s not doing so great- he had a few ok runs- but not great-
pretty much same-same F1 but wi different engine/fuel/weight/dimension specs
and F1 forced them into rear engine cars
ah ok, didn’t realize that- that woudl certainly muck with the weight distribution for sure-
I knew Richard hunted but damn! Way to go Richard! Guess that will piss off some woke people.
OH Yeah...
looking for splody head pix in the news now

Russian drivers in Formula 1 banned from competing in UK
https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/60586914
Russian drivers have been banned from competing in the UK by the national motorsport authority.
Motorsport UK will refuse to recognise licences of competitors from the Russian federation until further notice.
It means Nikita Mazepin cannot race in July’s British Grand Prix even if he continues to be part of the Haas team.
Mazepin’s father Dmitry provides financial backing to Haas and is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Haas are expected to sever links with their Russian driver.
Fifa and Uefa suspend all Russian clubs and national teams

Motorsport UK’s decision comes in the wake of the FIA, the international governing body, deciding to allow Russians to compete in events but ban teams from the country.
Motorsport UK chair David Richards is thought to have voted against the FIA’s decision at Tuesday’s meeting of its World motorsport council.
A statement from Motorsport UK stated:
No Russian/Belarusian-licensed teams are approved to enter motorsport competitions in the UK
No Russian/Belarusian-licensed competitors and officials are approved to participate in UK motorsport events
No Russian/Belarusian national symbols, colours, flags (on uniform, equipment and car) to be displayed at Motorsport UK-permitted events
It added that the sanctions had been taken in consultation with the UK Government.
Richards said: “It is our duty to use whatever influence and leverage we might have to bring this wholly unjustified invasion of Ukraine to a halt.
“We would encourage the motorsport community and our colleagues around the world to fully embrace the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee and do whatever we can to end this war.
“Motorsport UK stands united with Leonid Kostyuchenko, president of the Automobile Federation of Ukraine, the Ukrainian motorsport community and the Ukrainian people and calls for the violence to end with a peaceful resolution.”
Good deal, once this issue has been resolved, the Russians will pay much higher amounts to get back into F1.
