Banned Lotus 88 F1 car explained by Colin Chapman’s son

http://www.autoblog.com/2016/04/04/lotus-88-carbon-fiber-f1-aerodynamics-video/

Racing teams are always looking for ways to gain speed through creative interpretations of the rule book, but speed-obsessed engineers were a little too clever with the twin-chassis design for the Lotus 88 Formula One car. Colin Chapman’s son, Clive, gave Goodwood the racer’s fascinating story and why the organizers banned it.

Lotus’ innovation with the 88 was a novel twin-chassis layout. The outer chassis supported the aerodynamic elements and the body, and the inner one held the driver, engine, and transmission. The separate pieces allowed the car to meet the rules in the pits, but the outer chassis would create a seal with the track at speed to preserve the ground effect downforce. The organizers decided this ingenious solution went contrary to the rules against side skirts, and they banned the 88.

However, this Lotus was important for a second reason. The inner chassis was F1’s first carbon fiber monocoque. The lightweight material is common in racing and performance cars today, but it was a cutting-edge innovation for 1981. Get the full story from Clive Chapman in this clip.

it shows the double chassis L88 that passed scrutineering at Silverstone only to have the FIA ban it the day before the race

Damn, back to last year's qualifying program.

I was hoping really hoping they would bring on the Wheel of Qualifying.

You know where a driver, one at a time steps up to the wheel and gives it a spin. The number it lands on is their starting position. Talk about shaking up the starting row, the Wheel of Qualifying will do it!

Think about the excitement, think about the drama! You could even have Wheel of Qualifying girls!

“Narrated by the designer John Bernard, very interesting look at how we came to have carbon fiber tubs.”

Carbon Fiber from Hercules Aerospace, in Utah. Used in moon landing, later used in racing autos, racing sailboats, and racing airplanes. Hercules now part of Hexcel Corp.

Utah made a commitment as a state, to support advancing carbon fiber technology, with education etc.

Hercules grew from a technology company started in SF Bay area. Eventually carbon fiber in sailboats, including America’s cup winner, and skipper Bill Koch. Koch sold some of his inherited resources to the current Koch Brothers.

Carbon fiber now used in missiles, to make detection harder.

Tentacles of the military-industrial complex, crony-capitalism in a good way. Racing cars, and killing Islamic terrorists.

Carbon fiber. I have a neighbor, who was a technical illustrator, for McDonnell Douglas, later Boeing. He was amazingly handy and built entire cars from assembled parts, including making some from scratch. Metal, wood etc.

His son worked and sold skim boards, which were mainly from wood. Dad and son set about, to make skim boards from carbon fibre, and practiced in the garage. Alas they got it down.

Next dad made some needed body parts for his latest auto creation.

Son took up flying, and building planes for racing, etc. Now builds hi-tech planes.

Gene Haas Is Fed Up With Formula 1’s Baloney

From Road & Track

Gene Haas’ F1 team has had one of the most stunning debuts ever for a brand-new team. But Romain Grosjean’s unexpected sixth and fifth place finishes in the first two 2016 Grands Prix have led some to accuse Haas F1 of being little more than a Ferrari surrogate-the team’s VF16 cars use many Ferrari components in a Dallara chassis.

Gene Haas is having none of F1’s drama. In an interview with ESPN, he responded to these accusations, and didn’t mince his words.

“This place is a soap opera,” said Haas. “I think a lot of the teams at the back really don’t understand what competition is. They’re getting maybe a little too fat and happy.”

Haas F1 has already scored more points in two races than any first-year team in the last 25 years. The success has surprised everyone, even Haas’ team boss Gunther Steiner, but Mr. Haas doesn’t think his team’s success is a matter of parts.

“There’s an assumption that because we are using a lot of Ferrari parts that it makes it easier,” he said. “But I would challenge any team to take a complete Ferrari car with all the parts and just try to run it. They’re very complex cars.”

Then, Haas goes in for the kill shot.

“We never read that memo that said you had to come in to Formula One and run in the back for five years, so we kind of ignore that,” he said. “We’re not going away, they better get used to it and if people don’t like it that’s their problem, not my problem.”

Mic, dropped.

Haas’ NASCAR team, Stewart-Haas racing, is famous for sweating the details, and his F1 team follows the same approach. The team spent an extra year doing development work before joining the grid this year, and it seems to have paid off. While the rest of F1 is busy imploding, Haas F1 is working hard and getting results. Other teams might be wise to follow its example.

Monaco 1996: A shock win for Panis in the wet

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBRm5iCqQBk&feature=player_embedded

“All around the circuit there were crashed cars and angry drivers...” Olivier Panis, in a Ligier, steers clear of the havoc around him to win an extraordinary Grand Prix in the wet. Though hugely unexpected, this was an important and popular win for a French driver in a French car at Monte Carlo
