July 16, 2009--Forty years after U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon, many conspiracy theorists still insist the Apollo 11 moon landing was an elaborate hoax. Examine the photographic evidence, and find out why experts say some of the most common claims simply don't hold water.
You can tell Apollo was faked because ... the American flag appears to be flapping as if "in a breeze" in videos and photographs supposedly taken from the airless lunar surface.
The fact of the matter is ... "the video you see where the flag's moving is because the astronaut just placed it there, and the inertia from when they let go kept it moving," said spaceflight historian Roger Launius, of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.
The astronauts also accidentally bent the horizontal rods holding the flag in place several times, creating the appearance of a rippling flag in photographs (Apollo 11 moon-landing pictures).
The doubters could have just watched Myth Busters and saved themelves some time.
Here’s one thing you can see that proves the authenticity. No Apollo recreation done in the movies had space suits that had the inflated look to them, they all look like suits with equal pressurization to the outside atmosphere.
Since the Apollo astronauts were in the vacuum of space, they have an inflated look to them, you can also see how stiff their movements are because of that pressurization.
No re-creation I’ve seen has been able to duplicate that. Of course that won’t mean much to the ignorant, they’ll just see another photo that they don’t understand and believe it’s all fake.
Because that’s not the flag’s shadow.
Where is the shadow of the flag then?
To the right where it’s supposed to be.
I guess the real question is: If NASA went through all of the trouble to fake the landings, then why did they skimp when it came to adding a flag later? Why wasn’t it on the set to begin with?
You’re talking to an optical engineer. I have yet to see any anomalies in any of the photos.
Have you seen of Richard Hoglans photos?
