Sugar Substitutes: Healthy or Deadly?

"Why do things taste so good? I'm telling you why, NutraSweet is why…" So went the song in a 1990 television advertisement.

The video backed it up with images of family fun, male bonding, and cute kids - all consuming or presumably on the verge of drinking a diet soda. Sweeteners like aspartame would usher in an era of thin and happy.

Barry Sears, the biochemist who came up with the Zone diet, says it's not that simple.

"We now know data from Harvard Medical School in children who consume diet sodas gain weight," Sears told CBN News. "Well, how can that be? There are you know, no calories."

Increase Obesity?

Sears is far from alone in noting that more and more research shows that this empty sweetness makes the body expect food. When it doesn't arrive, you actually get hungrier. He explains in simple terms that the more sugar-free soft drinks you drink, the fatter you become.

And not only may artificial sweeteners - found in a staggering number of grocery products - increase obesity, but many experts say they're bad for you in other ways. That could be demonstrated in your own kitchen by pouring an aspartame-based diet soda into a hot pan.

The heat simulates what your body does when you consume aspartame - breaking it down into toxic formaldehyde. But don't try this as it could give you a migraine.

It’s poison. Why would ANYONE want to use it? Sugar is available. if you add sugar to an occasional treat, eaten AFTER a protein meal, there will be little hazard to your health from regular sugar. Or honey.

I see people reach for those nasty pink and blue packets for their coffee or tea. WHY? What are people trying to prove? Why would they put an artificial “creamer” into their coffee? Cream is the fat from cow’s milk. It’s not going to kill you. Just add a little bit if you like it, and cut calories elsewhere. Why add some kind of disgusting nonfood “creamer” just to change the color of your drink?

Sorry, hon, but I think if someone is diabetic, they should not use sugar OR sweeteners. Instead they should (and I’ve done it so I know it’s bleeping hard) go detox and have 3-4 really bad days, where no white flour, sugar, fake sugar, honey, white rice, dried fruit, canned fruit is eaten. The 3rd day will be the worst, where cravings for sugar are as high as someone craving heroin. BUT YOU WILL LIVE THROUGH IT.

Thereafter you will NOT crave sugar as often or as much, unless it creeps into your diet again. You will have more energy and if it’s Type 2 diabetes it will actually go away (add simple exercise). You will find how much of a little “something” (like raisins into oatmeal) can be added without you getting hooked on sugar again. You will adore the tastes of vegetables that you don’t like now.

Just call me an online idiot, and ignore this, but really, if you went through the sugar/sweetener withdrawal and got to the other side, it’s a CURE (for type 2) and not just a muddling through, holding the symptoms from getting worse type of thing, which is what fake sugar does.

Stick with organic produce and grass-fed organic meat, wild seafood, and free-range organic chicken and eggs therefrom, and you MINIMIZE the fake stuff, the hideous processing, etc.

Milk and dairy ONLY from GOOD organic farms. Check yours at http://www.cornucopia.org/dairysurvey/index.html .

Don’t eat packaged cr@p.

No, food production is not great. But since most of us are not foragers or farmers, we need to be wise consumers of what does, indeed, become part of us (our food).

I recommend anyone look at that page and it’s links for info about soy dangers.

Codex Alimentarius is only part of the depopulation plan that has been going on for some time, but it is a Bigee! I have read that almost or all of the foods in the produce section of our supermarkets will be irradiated, eliminating virtually all of the vitamins in them. But they will look just fine! And it won’t do anything to the mineral content ,which is way down in the last 50 years (the farmers haven’t replenished the soil, just sprayed more nitrogen based fertilizers on them). There could be a whole industry created in just doing that, but the big money doesn’t see it as part of the plan, I guess. Doesn’t Codex Alimentarius have to be implemented by the end of 2012 worldwide? They still have so many ways to kill us off, so many ways. People don’t get it on foxnews but in europe they are throwing things through bank windows and setting entire government buildings on fire, because they know what they are up to. People are pretty much asleep here in the U.S. The fight against all this is for our young people, this is their fight!

Are you referring to patented GMO’s or natural hybrids?

Genetic modification results in the modification of genes whether it's done through splicing or grafting.

Go ahead and eat all the patented GMO’s you want. I’ll stick to the natural hybrids.

Ah, I see. You really don't understand genetic modification like you think you do.

And I don’t get headaches from natural sources of MSG, isn’t that curious!

No, it's not curious at all. It explains why people who think they're allergic or sensitive to MSG have no idea what they're talking about. If they did they'd realize that they'd have the same reaction from added or natural sources. But, for some unknown reason, that reality is lost on them.

But the scare tactic doctor explains all that in his book. And I can’t cut and paste from his book it’s copyrighted

How convenient. Why not prove to us that you really know what you're talking about then and put the explanation into your own words? Educate us.

Also because the segments of insecticide/pesticide is in every cell of the corn/soy/canola, you get more insecticide/pesticide than from just spraying the stuff on the crop.

Good grief, the stuff people will believe. Now I'm even embarrassed for you.

But be sure to rinse it very well in fluoridated tap water before you cook it, you might get some of the insecticide/pesticide off of it that way.

I see you know nothing about fluoridation either. Did you ever manage to take and pass any classes in chemistry and physiology?

When I refer to GMO corn/soy I am talking about the Monsanto, etc patented variety of corn/soy

Why is Monsanto corn or soy dangerous for us but not other GM corn or soy?

Yes only 40% of the corn in the U.S. is known to be genetically engineered (monsanto).

Every ear of corn grown in the U.S. is known to be genetically modified.

It’s what the insecticide/pesticide segments does to your intestinal bacteria that is interesting too

Please explain exactly what the insecticide/pesticide segments do to our intestinal bacteria. Please be as specific as you can.

Don't you find it amazing that he FDA allows evil agribusiness to feed so much deadly foodstuff to the unsuspecting American public? I mean, we really need to do something before our life expectancy begins to plummet.

Please post a link to your source on sucralose not breaking down at all in the human body. Please tell us about it.

Not much to tell really. Your body doesn't recognize sucralose and therefore does not obtain any energy from it. That's why it's noncaloric.

Even if your body did metabolize all or some of it, why would you be concerned? Because it contains chlorine? If so, then I suppose you're also afraid of table salt. Given that you're afraid of toothpaste and drinking water, I wouldn't be surprised if salt also scares the heck out of you.

Weston Price? You read and believe the nonsense on that website? No wonder you're so confused. Your fear of soy is like your fear of everything else you've indicated on this thread...it's all based on a flagrant misunderstanding of science. I think it's a terrible waste going through life being a chemicalphobe or believing that so many things are toxic. I don't doubt that you'll be cheering as the government relieves you of even more of your freedom to choose -- based on junk science. Sheeple, they're a trip.

I don't recall anything about glutamate being made from papaya. In the old days MSG was made from seaweed but today most of it comes fermenting starch, corn sugar or molasses. Glutamate is an amino acid found in every protein containing food. MSG is the sodium salt of glutamate. MSG is glutamate, sodium and water.

Thanks for the breakdown ... who knows what I was remembering about papaya! But I appreciate this description.

Glutamate is also produced by your body and you couldn't function without it.

My understanding about cholesterol as well -- thanks again.

It is not just the ‘evil food companies’ our environment is filled with nasty compounds. Blaylock’s contention is that these exitoxins (MSG,Aspertame, etc) overstimulate the nerve cells, killing them, causing neurodegenerative diseases. When I say GMO foods I am referring to the Monsanto and other corporations pantented products where they use gene cassettes to add insecticide/herbicide molecular segments to corn/soy,etc the farmers love these because they can soak the corn/soy with insecticide/herbicide and it does not kill the plants. You might like them playing with poisons in this way but I don’t. People are dying in their 50’s and 60’s, it’s common place, was it so common place 100 years ago? There are so many more things in our food that has not been mentioned in this thread that we should be aware of. And these things are not in our food entirely accidentally, just look up eugenics.

Good thing you have a functioning liver then. Are you afraid of orange juice? You should be because it contains limonene (it gives orange juice it's flavor) which is also used as paint stripper. Potatoes contain arsenic. Better quit eating them. Lima beans contain cyanide. No more of them for you. Strawberries contain all sorts of toxic compounds. Roasting coffee and meat creates some of the most powerful carcinogens known to man. Take them off your shopping list. Apples and peanuts have aflatoxins. Be afraid. Benzene is found in fruits, vegetables and dairy. Apple juice, cider and red wine contain methanol.

What in the world are you going to eat? Like I said about having a functioning liver....

Blaylock’s contention is that these exitoxins (MSG,Aspertame, etc) overstimulate the nerve cells, killing them, causing neurodegenerative diseases

Do you think Blaylock has ever heard of the blood brain barrier? Blaylock is a toxic terrorist and a certified idiot. You need to find someone else to get your information from.

When I say GMO foods I am referring to the Monsanto and other corporations pantented products where they use gene cassettes to add insecticide/herbicide molecular segments to corn/soy,etc the farmers love these because they can soak the corn/soy with insecticide/herbicide and it does not kill the plants.

Ok, if you say so. Just add these to the other foods listed above that you can no longer eat.

You might like them playing with poisons in this way but I don’t

Yet you eat toxins with every meal. It's a wonder you're still alive.

People are dying in their 50’s and 60’s, it’s common place, was it so common place 100 years ago?

Life expectancies are much higher today than they were 100 years ago. IQ's are also much higher today because nutrition is so much better than it was 100 years ago.

There are so many more things in our food that has not been mentioned in this thread that we should be aware of. And these things are not in our food entirely accidentally, just look up eugenics.

Such a scary world. How do you manage to get out of bed every day? Have you ever taken any classes in chemistry, biology or nutrition?

come on, mase, you know the incidence of cancers are much higher now. You also know that 50 years ago produce had much more nutrients in them, because they have grown the crops on the same land. The cropland is depleted. My liver is fine. Yes, there are naturally occurring toxins. Blaylock looks at all kinds of things regarding concentrations of glutamate and aspertate in the blood, spinal cord, brain tissue in people with ALS,Alzheimers, etc. and what happens to these levels when the subject ingests MSG or aspertame. As far as the gene cassetted corn/soy, the monsanto corporation is buying up seed companies all over, soon you won’t be able to eat anything but gene cassetted foods. In 1960 the U.N. announced that the world’s population had to be reduced, and it is going to happen with codex alimentarius. The initial reaction to this ‘world’ is to repulse (denial). But the more you learn, you find out that this has been going for many thousands of years. And technology has been ‘rediscovered’ and developed. Surely you don’t rely on the history books that have been ‘revised’ every once in a while? And the red granite used in the giza piramid was cut with copper tools, right? We don’t really know what all they are doing with our foods, just what they tell us about, trust them. I have taken classes in chemistry and biology. I wish my doctor has had more classes in nutrition, he just knows how to prescribe pills.
