Goodbye, Sears Tower. Today is the first day that the Chicago skyscraper totes its official new name. The turning point for the tallest building in the U.S. was marked this morning with a public ceremony.

The 110-story building is owned by American Landmark Properties of Skokie, Ill., but London-based insurance-brokerage firm Willis Group Holdings “secured the naming rights as part an agreement to lease 140,000 square feet (13,000 sq. meters) of space, and has said it plans to bring hundreds of jobs to the city,” according to the Associated Press.

At the rate it is going, the next name will likely be something more like the Hong Kong-Shanghai Golden Tower, or even 香港上海金大厦.

It'll always be the Sears Tower to me....just as the Triboro Bridge in NYC will *never* be the “Robert F Kennedy Bridge” to me.

Let me be the first to say...as an ex-Chicago suburbanite who watched it being built, it will always and forever be Sears Tower.

Your comment brings to mind the apochryphal story about the John D. Rockefeller library at Brown University. Supposedly, when university officials learned that some of the students referred to the edifice as the “Rock,” they were appalled; they suggested that the students pick a more respectful name. As the story goes, the students changed the nickname to the “John.”

LOL! It's going to take awhile to get people to quit refering to it by the name by which everyone knows it.

Eventually, it MAY be known by "The Tower Previously Known as Sears."
