‘Torchwood’: Pro-American TV — From the BBC
Big Hollywood ^ | 7/14/2009 | Leigh Scott

think I’ve found the most pro-American show on television. True to form, its not produced in Hollywood.

Growing up, I was obsessed with “Dr. Who.” In the seventh grade I wore a Tom Baker style scarf to school every day (Baker and Davidson are my favorite “Doctors,” if you understand what that means, feel free to have it at in the comments). I thoroughly enjoy the “reboot” that currently airs on the SyFy channel and recently stumbled across its spin-off “Torchwood.”

Watched it until the increasing amount of gay content became too much.

That just about sums it up. I've been able to sit through one complete episode so far, that's it. And Rose Tyler is gross. But so is the BBC these days.

Dumb name for a character. Reminds me of a song by Billy Joel.

Jack Harkness? Why is that a stupid name?

It’s just a tv show.

You didn’t answer my question - why is the tv name of a tv show character stupid? Did you not realize that the Captain was his rank in the military?

It’s on BBC America, if you get it on your digital cable.

Tom Baker is also my favorite. Poor Colin Baker could have been much better if he’d been given better scripts to work with. Eric Saward was a much better writer in his head than in real life. McCoy’s stuff from Delta and the Bannermen on was good also.

The creator of both New Doctor Who and Torchwood, Russell T Davies, is a militant gay activist who takes potshots at Bush in his episodes. See the Doctor Who episodes like “Aliens of London” or “Christmas Invasion”.

The single worst episode of a television show I have ever seen was a Torchwood episode - some robotic amazon robot/alien/whatever clomping around. Plus the obvious attempt to make about 3% of the population (gays) completely normal a perfectly acceptable “life style choice” is laughable - particularly as the show bills it as “adult”.

It’s a really bad show!

That would be the Torchwood episode “Cyberwoman”. Very bad.

I didn’t buy how Ianto was so lovestruck over his Cyberwoman girlfriend, then a few episodes later became Capt. Jack’s gay lover.

Warehouse 13 is along the lines of Torchwood and Primeval. I’ve just seen 1 episode, not bad. Tom Baker’s about the only Dr. Who I’ve seen alot of. I’ve seen some of the early 60’s black and white Dr Who and a few of the latest version. Also not bad.

Torchwood is quit possible the best show on TV. Captain Jack is ruthless in defense of the planet.

I was very touched when the Daleks forced the Dr to face the truth. The pain that caused him was very well played.

Oh, I didn’t know that.

I’ve just seen the last two...not the classic ones.

Thanks,

Ed

Hmm...I’m racking my brain trying to recall that.

Oh well.

I do think two of the greatest TV shows ever were Doctor Who episodes.

Silence In The Library was outstanding, and Blink was the best show I’ve ever seen.

Davros: “The man who abhors violence, never carrying a gun. But this is the truth, Doctor. You take ordinary people and you fashion them into weapons. Behold your Children of Time transformed into murderers. I made the Daleks, Doctor. You made this.”

OK Darvos is evil, but he's not wrong.

Yes the Doctor is anti gun peaceful resolution, but unlike US characters like MacGuyver, he doesn't always get to make the best argument.

Harriet Jones, Prime Minister (we know who you are) was right to blast the fleeing spaceship out of the sky in "Christmas Invasion". The bad guys or their associates will come back and Earth cannot rely on the Doctor showing up next time. And the show later showed what trouble the Doctor's hissy fit caused.

And even in the Classic series, the better companions (Leela, Ace, and even sweet, gentle Nyssa) often ignored the Docor's preaching and used a little violence to resolve matters.

Wow, I’ve GOT to see that eppie!

And yeah, Harriet Jones was right to destroy them...

Thanks,
