I have corn in a raised bed...my understanding is that corn should be side-dressed with nitrogen when two feet tall. My local feed store sold me a bag of white ‘pellets’ that could also double as ‘ice melt’ in the winter. That made me a bit nervous. 46-0-0...is this safe to side dress corn? (I know...keep it a couple of inches away from the plant; then water it in...right?) Or should I return this, and try something else?
Use care in a raised bed—it’s just like a big pot.
We sell a 34% nitrogen—34-0-0—for sidedressing corn. You do it when the corn is about knee high. Go about 8-10 inches from the plant and string some down the row.
I’m guessing you’re in the north or west. Here in the south we’ve been eating corn for at least a month. It’s long past the sidedressing stage. :}
Geeze! That’s a LOT of nitrogen...but it most liklely will work.
High Nitrogen IS needed for corn, and the sweet corn field (700 acres) around me WAS side dressed with injected (into the soil, but I got a few wiffs!) Anhydrous Ammonia, fer Pete’s Sake, and despite a lack of rain, that corn is lookin’ good and doing just fine. Nice and green :)
