The Romans built to last. A few years back, I drove north from Rome to Perrugia and Urbino. The modern motorway follows the Via Flaminia in many sections. While impressed by the many bridges still in use from the first and second centuries B.C., I was flabbergasted to drive through tunnels--at a very high rate of speed--from that period. Truly amazing.

On one of my first trips to France I asked our hotel concierge if there were any Roman roads around to see, he said, pretty much any highway we drove on.

To an engineer or architect, the achievements of the Romans are almost beyond belief - the Pantheon, the Pont du Gard, the many amphitheaters throughout the Mediterranean are wonders that never cease to amaze.
