We have remained, since our Apollo days, locked in Earth orbit. But five years ago, NASA was tasked with returning to the moon by 2020, rerunning the moon race that we won 40 years ago. Not surprisingly, this new race has failed to ignite the imagination of young Americans -- or their leaders.
What we truly need is not more Cold War-style competition but a destination in space that offers great rewards for the risks to achieve it. I believe that destination must be homesteading Mars, the first human colony on another world.
By refocusing our space program on Mars for America's future, we can restore the sense of wonder and adventure in space exploration that we knew in the summer of 1969. We won the moon race; now it's time for us to live and work on Mars, first on its moons and then on its surface.
Exploring and colonizing Mars can bring us new scientific understanding of climate change, of how planet-wide processes can make a warm and wet world into a barren landscape. By exploring and understanding Mars, we may gain key insights into the past and future of our own world.
Just as Mars -- a desert planet -- gives us insights into global climate change on Earth, the promise awaits for bringing back to life portions of the Red Planet through the application of Earth Science to its similar chemistry, possibly reawakening its life-bearing potential.
Four decades ago, I was privileged to have been part of a great mission of exploration and discovery. But America's future in space has only just started. It is time for us to continue the journey.

They put their lives on the line to lead man space exploration and the agency and government has betrayed that sacrafice.
They’ve been frustrated at the opposition to manned space travel in the subsequent FORTY years. They’ll never live to see anything come of it.
We should get crackin’ on this. After all it’s only 55 years until Zephram Cochran invents warp drive in the Post Obama-Apocalypse era...

That's why we CANNOT look at global climate change also occurring on Mars. Because the Greenie Weenie movement is designed to make money for some people selling worthless "carbon offset credits" and to restrict Western industrialization out of spite (third world countries aren't held to the same standard, only the US has to get "off oil" as China and India ramp up in their usage).

My favorite is when Zefram Cochran shoots the Vulcan ‘first contact’ with a shotgun before the opening credits of “In a mirror, darkly” my second favorite ST Enterprise episode(s).
No. 1 being the wonderful ‘Carbon Creek’.
I admire his accomplishment and his motivation for advancement.
However, there are major obstacles:
1. The current majority party is busy cementing itself into power at the expense of the long-term health of the country. Fianacing exploration is now less important than financing organizations that engage in voter fraud.
2. The current administration is attempting to change our economy from capatalism to socialism. The result will be dependency, not innovation. The goal of most present day scientists is getting government financing, not discovery.
3. The current President is speaking at graduation ceremonies and is imploring our youth to forego personal enrichment and instead give of one’s self to community service. Engineers don’t do pro bono work. We’ve forgotten how to get to the moon, and the talent pool for the machinery is pretty shallow.

Well I have to agree with Buzz Aldrin about one thing, it’s hard to get fired up about going to the moon again...been there done that. The prospect of going to Mars, that really would be exciting, I would love it if we could do that, but at this point it sure looks like it would be prohibitively expensive.

Buzz, we’re borrowing money from the Chinese to fill potholes now. If you want a space program, better bring back an economy that can support one.
Aldrin has a fascinating idea. Establish a ship in “orbit” around the Earth and Mars, using gravitational forces to send it between the two planets. It uses very little fuel and becomes a shuttle between the planets.
Maybe we can help by sharing technology with China or India - nations that can still afford it - send a mission to Mars. We’ve got too many voting-age dependents to care for.
I wouldn't find it any more exciting than sending robotic craft, but even if others are thrilled, that's going to wear off once the mission is accomplished, just like Apollo.
We really need to find better and more efficient ways to get into orbit, so that everybody will have a chance to experience the thrill themselves.

Better than going to Mars... we should open up the moon (at least the far side) to mining. That way, we can get commerce to find some innovative ways to get to the moon at less cost, and safely, and that’s most of the work of getting to and from Mars. And then once at Mars, yes, we can study terraforming a bit and figure out how much our atmosphere really affects us.
Given the present state of US finances, any serious Mars program will need to be funded by a WW2-like program of collecting foil gum wrappers and grocery twine.
Or maybe the massive savings from moving to “single-payer” health care.

OK, I am going to to make sure I am in Bozeman Montana during the summer 2154, when the Vucalns come out I will be one of the first to loot their ship.
