109th UNITED STATES OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP LIVE THREAD

IT'S FINALLY HERE!!! Farmingdale, New York again becomes the center of the golf world as Bethpage State Park and it's stunning renowned Black course hosts the second major of the year. We all remember what happened 7 years ago and if we're not big Sergio Garcia fans, let's hope it happens AGAIN!!! OK, I'm only kidding!!!

Can anything top last year's play and excitement? Probably. If Phil wins in front of a crowd that will be decidely in his favor how cool will that be.........Let's go back a decade and remember......

We all know the details. Fathers Day 1999, Pinehurst#2. A cold, wet Sunday that produced on of the lasting memories of all time. We know how long the putt was. We remember how silent the crowd was. We remember Dick Enberg's famed 2 words to describe it. And we remember the embrace between Phil Mickelson and Payne Stewart and the class that both players showed. We remember Payne telling Phil the great joy he was going to have in becoming a father for the first time............

And then on October 24th, 1999, we remember that God called Payne Stewart home. It is with joy and sadness that we remember what happened at Pinehurst 10 years ago. I miss ya Payne. You were such a great ambassador for the game!!

OK, so who do we like? Who other than Tiger is going to tame the 7,400+ yard layout and come Sunday night will be our next champion?

Feel free to post your predictions and graphics that will add to the enjoyment of the event.......

There still is a chance they can finish tomorrow, unless there’s a playoff of course, which never sucks!!!

If and only if they can start at 7:30 and everyone’s on the course before 8:00, the 3rd round should end around 12:30.If they want to re pair and start round 4 around 1:30, the leaders will start before 3:30 and there you go.

Again the one saving grace is the smallest possible field to make the cut, 60.

We’re assuming there won’t be any rain tonight, which is highly doubtful. Then we’re assuming the 70% rain chance for tomorrow is wronga.zor it only rains a little.

We’re still playing at least Monday, I think......

I think it will be a monday finish as well. I think it was good thatthe rain came in for both tiger and Phil. Tiger looked awful on his first hole, needed to retool. Phil survived it with a par save. Now that that’s out of the way I expect them both to make a charge tomorrow. Curious to see what Weir and Hamilton do. O’Hair is my dark horse.

I’ike your analysis on all the players you mentioned. Obviously everyone expects Tiger to make some kind of move and the crowd is gonna do everything in their power to help Phil out. Weir and Hamilton have that veteran moxie that makes you think they’re going to be in the mix at the end.

Sean O’:Hair presents the most interesting story. His wife is expecting their 3rd(I think)child at any moment. Cell phone is at the ready and he’ll have to decide what to do if the call comes. His story is a good one too. After dealing with the family problems he had, his game has really taken off. Yeah, I could see Sean penning a good Sunday story.

Let me throw 2 more names your way. First, don’t ever, NEVER count Jim Furyk out of this thing. That is one hell of a solid unflappable player, if I ever saw one.
The second, Steve Stricker. He has Phil at his side and if he gets started good, and Phil comes along with him, and that crowd gets on their side, LOOK OUT!!!

What part of Maine is your domicile(I love that word)? Some long time friends are up your way visiting their son in Phippsburg. And I mean the whole family went up, from their one daughter in Cincinnati to the other one in Port Clinton(about 60 miles west of here)......I call him last night and they all met up in Boston having a good ‘ol time....

Unfortunately Lewiston/Auburn is where I live. Not really the part of Maine one should visit. It’s a lot nicer once you get north of here.
I guess O’hair was suppose to tee off at 7:30. Now the website says play starts at noon. It’s going to be a long day.

Looks ugly down there on Long Island...

USGA UPDATE (7:33 a.m.): The putting green and driving range are closed to players until at least 10 a.m. ET. Spectators will not be granted entry to the course until at least 11 a.m. ET. The field was apprised of the situation early Sunday morning. The tentative plan for Sunday is to wait for the weather to improve and then finish the third round. Time (and weather) permitting, the final round will begin Sunday and be completed Monday.

Morning fellas!!!

Yeah, the rain won’t stop a fallin’. Play has been delayed until at least 12 Noon as the Black continues to drown......

If, and only if they start then and assuming there are no other delays today, figure round 3 ending between 4:30 and 5:00. They will make every attempt tp repair and reset the course so that final round play may begin 60-90 minutes after completion of round 3. If they can start round 4 before 6:00, at least everyone will get some holes in. any later and that doesn’t happen.

Fact is golf will be played tomorrow. If they finish no later than early afternoon and there has to be a playoff, it happens right away........

I sure hope the crowd brings it like they did the last couple of hours yesterday......

Well there’s going to be golf tomorrow after all!!! At least those who went Thursday get to go. And who knows, if it works out right, they may even see a playoff on top of it!!!

I hope you get to see uninterrupted play once things get started at Noon.

If I do, it's going to be on TV. It was pouring here in NJ when I woke up just before 6. Even before they pushed things back to noon, I decided that I might be making the two hour trip out there for nothing, and decided not to go. It's really too bad. I was going to go out there with my son, sort of a Fathers' Day present to myself. But if they get ANY rain at all, it's going to force additional delays, and maybe even a complete cancellation. The organization of these tournaments is great but they're just not set up to accommodate a waiting crowd. Maybe I'll go out tomorrow? I haven't decided yet.

When you’re 2 hours away, it’s not an easy decision to make, that’s for sure. I checked the radar of the area, and although it’s dry now, there’s a lot of rain just east to there and it looks like it wants to move back towards NYC. if any more rain falls, I can’t possibly imagine play continuing.

If you’ve watched ESPN, in interviewing some of the players, they would much rather play a complete 4th round on Monday, rather than start it tonight and just play a few holes. In this csse, I wholeheartly agree. This is our major tournament. Don’t cheapen it’s importance by saving a little time, when so much as been lost already, by no control of anyone.....

I forgot about Retief. And the crowd won’t have any effect on him either....

When you’re 2 hours away

Just so you know, it takes the people who live in Bethpage about an hour to get on the course. (This week, that is.)

Has nothing to do with the size of the park. They're not allowing any foot traffic. I talked to some guys who actually took a train from Bethpage to Farmingdale (which is where I went from NYC) and then took the bus from there over to the course.
