Has anyone noticed that von Brunn did his crime at age 88? The number has special significance for admirers of Hitler, because the eighth letter of the alphabet is H. 88 thus is a code for HH, standing for Heil Hitler.
Some nutty people are very much taken with such numerology, and it is possible that this tendency caused von Brunn to think that this was the time in his life to make his mark.
On the other hand, he was not very well organized. He left his car out on the street, double-parked, with plenty of evidence in it. What a sloppy guy! Perhaps he intended to die in the shoot-out, and perhaps he will be successful yet, for he is in bad condition in the hospital.
What a shame that a dedicated guard, admired by his coworkers, and polite enough to hold the door for the elderly killer, was shot dead. It is hard for us to face such brutality as the murder of likable, inoffensive individual.
The number 88 in the wannabe Nazi's worlds refers to the 88mm antiaircraft gun and this guy was 89 so your 1mm short of a conspiracy
