Freeper help: I'm in love with a liberal (vanity)
Posted on 05/27/2009 2:23:38 PM PDT by Karma Police
Sorry for the vanity, but I'm in serious need of some freeper advice here. I think I'm falling in love with a liberal. She's beautiful and has a big heart, but we have conflicting political ideologies. Does anyone have any tips for being in a relationship like that? Thanks FRiends...

Eventually, the poor sap will be at a party with a bunch of his wife’s wing-nut liberal buddies and the poor sap will shoot his mouth off and the next thing he knows, he’ll be on the couch with the chocolate lab.
It can’t and shouldn’t work...go, run.

I had a girlfriend try that with me.
Once.
Tried to turn a cranky redneck military brat into what we would now term a "metrosexual".
I-95 was my friend.

IMHO, run for your life!! LOL...anyway, I can tell you this, with differences like that it can destroy your relationship. I have family members who are liberal and we literally have nothing to talk about. How can you be really close to someone when they have liberal(aka socialist) beliefs? I could not do it, no way, no how. Agreed. We have relatives that are Democrats too and the family get togethers are always 'tense'. Not much fun in that.

I think that ultimately you will be unhappy. Because that core part of you, what makes you really you, at the core belief level will be hidden. You will censor yourself, second guess your words, and hide what you believe and are. You will do it for awhile, and your ‘love’ will cover it for a while. But it will leak out and cause fights. You will begin to resent her more and more for it and she will express shock that she doesn’t know you anymore.
First and foremost be true to yourself. If you are unable to do and be that with person it will lead to nothing but sadness

Sure, my wife of 35 years is a flaming liberal. Drives me crazy but we avoid political discussions. In every other way she is a perfect wife and I wouldn’t trade her for any other woman.

What do you mean ‘liberal?’
If she believes unborn children are human and should be as protected the day before they are born as the day after you are 33% the way there.
If you have a permit and can carry while on a date and have her smile at you then you are home free. You are 66% the way there.
If she can take responsibility for her own mistakes and honestly apoligize without blaming somebody else you are home free.
That is LIFE, LIBERTY, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
The rest of liberal nonsense can be drained out over time.

Sound out your last name having added hers and a hyphen to it. See if you like it.
* Not for her. To have your last name changed should you get a “life partner”.

Does she love you?
If you do love each other and can agree to never let politics get in between you two, go for it. Be very up front with her about how deep your conservatism is and how much you despise liberalism. See how she responds.

One day you will return home and find a tweed jacket with leather elbow patches hanging in the closet next to your camo jacket.LOL! My guess the guy doesn't own a camo jacket...if he has to ax FReepers for advice on a topic so basic, he likely already owns a tweed jacket with leather elbo patches.

DON'T DO IT!
If you can't respect a person's ability to reason then you can't respect them at all.
For a lasting relationship it is critical to agree on all the most important issues. Triply so if you want to have kids. Can you imagine letting a liberal teach your kids what is important in life? *shudder* And don't assume you can change the liberal. It is NEVER a good idea to start from the assumption that the person will change if that change is NEEDED to make things last.
I met my wife here on FR and I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be with someone whose brains and opinions you can respect clear down to your toes.
This sort of problem is exactly why one should guard their heart until they are ALREADY sure the person is long term relationship material. Falling in love should be the last thing you do (or way down the list), not the first.

True Love doesn't "fall" for anyone. When the lust wears off you'll be stuck with a F'N Liberal! LOL! Think about it.

You’re just at the start of the adventure. 10 years from now, when both of you are overweight, pressured by work, kids, etc... - you two better have a lot in common to keep the flames alive, or yr. relationship will be hell.
