Freeper help: I'm in love with a liberal (vanity)
Posted on 05/27/2009 2:23:38 PM PDT by Karma Police
Sorry for the vanity, but I'm in serious need of some freeper advice here. I think I'm falling in love with a liberal. She's beautiful and has a big heart, but we have conflicting political ideologies. Does anyone have any tips for being in a relationship like that? Thanks FRiends...

No, they are not. Good catch. I should have added the caveat of the NPR listening being an example of the most liberal thing she does. While the former may often be the latter also, the latter is not necessarily also the former.

My ex-husband was (probably still is) liberal. It was fun at first - opposites attract, and all that - but eventually it wasn’t. :) Can you convert her?

Depends what kind of liberal. As long as they aren’t full of hate, you have a chance. Some people are liberal because it’s how they were raised, but tend to be somewhat open-minded. I’ll give you a few issues and classify the responses as “MIGHT WORK” and “RUN.” All responses are liberal and not my views, but I’m illustrating a dividing line in liberalism:
Abortion:
MIGHT WORK: “I am uncomfortable with abortion, but I’ve known women who have had unplanned pregnancies and I feel even more uncomfortable forcing them to go to term. It’s a tough issue, though.”
RUN: “If these so called pro-lifers really cared about children, they would work to help children after they are born.”
Global warming:
MIGHT WORK: “I’ve read some scientific articles on global warming and some experts say we might have a serious problem. The government should spend money on research for cleaner fuels.”
RUN: “I am constantly worrying about my carbon footprint. This global warming is going to kill us all and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot or being paid by the oild companies.”
Former president George W. Bush:
MIGHT WORK “I don’t think we needed to have that war in Iraq. Maybe the intelligence reports were bad, but it seems the president should be on top of those things. I also think he spent too much and I didn’t favor some of his environmental policies. But I like the work he did on AIDS in Africa and he seems like a genuinely nice guy.”
RUN: (Long list of swear words at the mention of his name.)
You get the idea.

What are her liberal beliefs? How old are both of you?
When I met my husband, he was left-leaning in some areas, and 20+ years later I still tease him about voting for Mondale/Ferraro.

Spot on, DogBarkTree.
One more suggestion to the poster. Promise the object of your affections that you’ll read “The Audacity of Hope” or any other book of her choosing if she will read ANY book by Thomas Sowell. Sit down together and read. When you’re both done, I guarantee you’ll have your woman, and a soulmate, to boot.

Just shoot yourself in the foot. It will heal more quickly, scar less, and be far less painful and expensie in the long run.

and if you cant find a conservative girl. This will sound so insane. Go Russian. Its like an American girl from the 50s bro,,, running the vacuum cleaner in heels,, kind, conservative,,love to cook,,really likes feminine things.
But for gods sake, dont take your liberal GF over there. Its a weird trend today for liberal women. You could accidently spread feminism, its like smallpox with the indians.

I dated a liberal man for about 6 months, after that I couldnt take it anymore. He had no original thoughts, he was like little talking parrot trying to impress me with his thoughts on world news. It gets old real quick
Just my opinion here (as a man), but liberal men are so much annoying than liberal women. At least I can say that I know some liberal women who are "sweet" and who try hard to do what's right. Their hearts are in the right place, even if they're misdirected. But liberal men are like homosexuals...simply worthless. They've got everything they need to BE a man, but they choose to be something else, and never quite make that mark either...just ending up being a freak for all to see.

I think I'm falling in love with a liberal. She's beautiful and has a big heart, but we have conflicting political ideologies. Does anyone have any tips for being in a relationship like that?
First of all, I tend to think that if you were truly in love, you wouldnt be asking total strangers on the internet for advice. I hope Im wrong.
Secondly, you say she is beautiful and has a big heart, but what does that really mean to you? What (aside from physical attributes) makes her beautiful to you and what does having a big heart mean to you?
Ask yourself if her physical beauty was suddenly removed lets say in a horrible accident would you still love her and why? Can you list any of the reasons? Would she be the same person to you if suddenly she looked different?
I have some good friends and close relatives who differ from me in political and religious beliefs and many of them have big hearts. We may politely agree to disagree and sometimes spiritedly and vehemently and occasionally angrily argue with each other, but I know if the chips are down, if I was in a crisis, that these people whom I love and trust, would drop everything to come to my aid and I would do the same for them.
Would you do that for her even if you were angry with her over a political disagreement? Would she do the same for you?
Do you have expectations of changing her? Does she have expectations of changing you? If either is the case then the relationship could be doomed.
I dont know how old you are or what your experience in love is, but Im old enough to tell you that even your sole mate is not likely to be your exact clone. There will always be differences of POV and learning to work through them is what makes a relationship work in the long term. Sometimes opposites can compliment each other when the relationship is truly based on unconditional love and mutual trust and respect. Having a lot in common helps but does not necessarily guarantee a happy and long term relationship.

How does she feel about abortion and firearms?
What happens if she wants an abortion and you don’t want her to have one?
What if she doesn’t want a gun in the house when you do, but you give in to her only to have an intruder bring harm to her or you—or the children? Can you deal with that?

LOL! My husband and I were definitely a “mixed couple” when it came to religion and politics back when we met in college.

That sums it up Liberals think it's okay to throw babies in the trash and Conservatives don't. How could you love someone who thinks throwing babies in the trash is okay?

Fuggidaboutit - all you’re really feeling at this juncture in time are hormones. Rational thought, religious values, morals, reasoning processes and critical thought, worldview, historical analysis will all constitute the fabric of a lifetime together - in this case, there will be no agreement between you and a Leftist. The only place where polar opposites fall in love and stay that way is in a figment of Hollywood imagination.

“It can work as long as you both agree to...
1. Never talk politics
2. Never talk religion
3. Never go to sleep angry with each other”
Utterly impossible, take it from me. True example, you think taking a kid to Disneyland is cool. she wants them to protest at the front gate at Ft Benning, school of the Americas.
You want to go Jeeping in the mountains. She wants to close all roads to off highway vehicles.
She sees a clock on your wall, “give thanks to the lord, for he is good”,, makes snide abortion comment.
You want a steak, or enchiladas,, she wants sushi, or auruvedic cuisine. (from india,,bland, tasteless, blended or soft, no spices, room temperature)
You think you’ll just stop at WalMart for “X”,, she hates walmart.
Starbucks coffee good, McDonalds coffee bad.
There is no way to live life with a liberal. Remember that old saying of theirs, “the personal is the political”? They really do mean it,, really. Seriously,,, for real.

This is what you call a "mixed marriage".
It can work as long as you both agree to...
1. Never talk politics
2. Never talk religion
3. Never go to sleep angry with each other
That recipe will never work. Worldview is intrinsic to religion and politics. If there is no congruence in these core realms, there will be little else in the only sphere of intersection left - and you will go to sleep angry with one another. Eventually, even that will go away after you really understand one another. ;)
