“Actually, in order for one object to be circling another, you have to assume that one is in a fixed position. Since modern science tells us that both the earth and the sun are in motion, its just as logical to say the sun is revolving around the earth as vice versa. Just sayin...”
So therefore using your critical method of logic, the earth circles the moon. Just sayin...
But my MAIN point was that Galileo went against the prevailing religious take on the matter, and wound up under house arrest.
Galileo is considered the father of modern science. He was correct about the solar system, and the religious people were wrong.

Im still interested in the discovery of clam shells in the Alps, I believe, but my memory isn't what it used to be, they have found hippo bones in the highlands somewhere in Great Britain. I ,too, am interested in how all these things came about and neither depend on science or religion to form any solid opinions. I don't know if that is a good thing or not, but it is the way I am:)

Actually, in order for one object to be circling another, you have to assume that one is in a fixed position. Since modern science tells us that both the earth and the sun are in motion, its just as logical to say the sun is revolving around the earth as vice versa. Just sayin... I am sorry, have to disagree with that. Even though they are both in motion the earth is in an orbit around the sun, the sun is not in orbit around the earth, if it were our seasons would be totally fubar. So, while the sum may move from x to y in a given time period the earth moves the same distance in the same direction and thus the effects are the same as if the sun and the earth were stationary.
This is not a guess or an opinion but fact.

Two bodies locked in orbit each move about "a common center of gravity" for the pair.
Since the Sun is sooooo much more massive than the Earth, the Sun-Earth common center of gravity lies INSIDE the sphere of the Sun. From a PRACTICAL standpoint, since the Earth's motion about the center of gravity is about a ZILLION times more than the Sun's, it's OK to say that the Earth is circling the Sun.
HOWEVER you CANNOT be so sloppy with this as the two bodies in question start to have similar masses. For example, the Earth-Moon center of gravity is STILL inside the sphere of the Earth, but only just so (about 3/4 from the center to the surface) The Sun-Jupiter center of mass lies OUTSIDE the sphere of the Sun (by about 28 thousand miles or so). So, it is ABSOLUTELY accurate to say that you can think of the Sun as going around and around a circular path due to Jupiter. For binary star systems, the effect is even MORE pronouced, as the center of gravity approaches the center of the physical distance separating the stars.
(Yes, I know I said "circle" when "ellipse" would have been more precise, but we have verbs like "circling" but we don't have verbs like ellipsessing...)

I repeat, the earth circles the sun, the sun does NOT circle the earth, if it did our seasons would not be as they are. End of story.

it really amazes me how our scientific community can say something is 200,000 years old when carbon dating can only go back 50,000 years? There are many other dating methods than just carbon 14.
I'm among the most devout Christians you will ever meet and I am fine with how God created the universe and the wonderful intellect he gave mankind that allows us to discover and understand His work. The history of Creation for me is one of it's most fascinating beauties.

Notice the “as if”. LOL. Kinda like saying someone is “as if” is she were pregnant.
To: truth_seeker
No, silly. The point is that the whole “scientist” worldview is that scientists determine “facts” that exist regardless of whether, or how, they are observed by human beings ... but lo and behold, the supposed “fact” that the earth revolves around the sun is made problematic by the equal fact that both bodies are in motion, so now the scientist must say it is “as if” the earth revolves around the sun. Big difference. If the scientist is going to throw in “as ifs”, I might as well base my view on my perception, that looking up into the sky for a whole day, it is “as if” the sun revolves around the earth.
