Only one thing kept coming to mind; in regards to naysayers, why UFOs in particular, or this subject in particular, the observation about mostly males interested in fast cars, and "racy" women as you said... That ONE WORD IS:

CONTROL

I also do have some beliefs that people who can't deal with the possibilities and philosophical discussions of this issue might have problems with other more "abstract" ideas (for instance, God and religion -- which requires faith, understanding of what we could technically term an abstract idea (at least for many people)).

One more possibility -- leftover issues from their pasts as you pointed out attachment disorders, and other issues that manifest in the need to degrade others to bolster their own self-image, or latch on to some idea, or place themselves in a group in which they feel they can't possibly be wrong again to bolster their sense of self, ego, intelligence level, etc...

This would be, in itself, a fascinating philosophical discussion -- why topics that are more abstract (at least in our ability to prove) are completely dismissed as "fringe", when people take other things that SHOULD be even harder to accept at an intellectual level as proven truths (like quantum physics for example, dark matter, and such topics that most will never "see" much less truly be able to understand, thus making it more abstract than physical - yes, I know that's kind of weird since it's in the realm of physics itself, but I think you know what I mean).

Again though the recurrent feature I see in a lot of these things are issues of Control, and a struggle for power either within themselves due to some sort of denial, or power over others, or things over which they have no control which may invoke a feeling of uneasiness and yes, fear that they refuse to acknowledge and deal with...

Not that this is true for ALL naysayers -- you'd have to know them PERSONALLY to make any sort of judgment as to their exact motivations obviously -- just that it's a theme I've noticed as well...

Many who seem to appreciate these topics and the discussions thereon seem to be more the type that are truly open-minded, and are continually seeking knowledge, IMO. Not that anyone is CONVINCED of exactly WHAT we are seeing or noticing, other than through years of research being able to impart what they BELIEVE and KNOW to be truth.

Others, just don't seem to understand even the TYPE of debate that goes on in these threads.

Again, I think it comes back to the basics of fear, and control (and/or using those concepts to steer discussions away from serious contemplation as well, when it comes to astroturfers, or "free-lance" trouble-makers, so to speak).

To this portion of my post:

One more possibility — leftover issues from their pasts as you pointed out attachment disorders, and other issues that manifest in the need to degrade others to bolster their own self-image, or latch on to some idea, or place themselves in a group in which they feel they can’t possibly be wrong again to bolster their sense of self, ego, intelligence level, etc...

I should’ve also added:
When I speak of the naysayers putting themselves in a group in which they feel protected and speak out to bolster their own self-image, it’s usually in a way that poses NO REAL RISK to their sometimes created reality. It is those who take the risk to discuss these issues that are the only ones truthfully putting themselves out there...

It doesn’t take much courage for one to sit at a computer and denigrade others and their ideas as “idiotic”, or “silly”, or “stupid” or having “no worth”.

It takes much more courage and honesty to come forward and discuss these issues in an intelligent manner and allowing for the possibilities given that we are only a small part of an immense universe...
