Vacation?
What’s that?
I thought Pillars of the Earth was dreadful. I could not get past the first 100 pages or so.
And I’m a medievalist!
I’m been reading a few books, but I’ve also been listening to a dramatization of Neal Donaldson’s ANATHEM. Not bad. A little odd, perhaps pretentious at times, but not bad as entertainment thus far.
Hmmm... I haven’t read anything extremely good lately, but I can at least warn you all to stay away from Stephenie Meyer (unless you’re into sickeningly-cute yet squeaky-clean teenage romance drivel) cause she can’t write her way out of a paper bag, and really stay away from Dan Brown because even if you don’t mind the Catholic-bashing in his books, he makes Meyer look like Shakespeare in comparison to his attempts at writing.
However, I am looking for good, preferably fiction, book recommendations, so fire away.
If you want a real page turner, go with “Dr. Mary’s Monkey.” It’s the true story about the murder in New Orleans of Dr. Mary Sherman, a nationally renowned medical researcher. I am from N.O. and actually know/knew some of the people involved so I am prejudiced but, notwithstanding that, it is a terrific read. (BTW, I have no financial interest, directly or indirectly, in the book or this rec - wish I did.)
