'did they just say that the owners couldnt afford to race the Preakness or the Belmont?

I don't know about before, but they certainly can now. What a story. $9,500 hundred for a Derby record. That has to be some kind of record (adjusted for inflation).

My 10 year-old daughter won the neighborhood pool because she liked the name - she won an I-Pod.

"Did I hear them say he won by 6 1/2 lengths......2nd biggest asswhooping ever in the Derby?

I could be wrong, but that would seem a little surprising. I think that Secretariat and Barbaro - maybe even Funnycide won by that much - but like I said, I could be wrong - I'm going from memory.

That's interesting to learn. I had thought for sure that Secretariat won big, but I may be thinking about that year's Preakness.

That “ragin cajun” jockey won big today.

Great horse. Great race. Wish we could have been there.

Switching to football for just a second, and the Chicago Bears/Refrigerator Perry Supah-Bo era, I sent 20 bucks to a customer in Vegas to place a sports book bet on "Da Fridge" making a touchdown during that event....he did, and I shoulda won something like $400............said customer claimed on Monday she "never got over to the casino to place my bet".

I got hosed, bigtime....but that's OK - I made it up by overcharging her on future orders, three-fold.

Great story! There were horses in the race bought for millions of dollars. Mine That Bird was bought for $9,500.

At least us horse racing folks don't attend hoping to see a big pile-up.

Of course not. And we ballet fans don't either.

Hope your horse won.

LOL!! Nevaaah cheat your business partners out of a football win. It’s like dissing a waiter (who will be alone with your food and drink...)!

It was the Belmont that Secretariat blew the field away by something like 19 1/2 lengths. Incredible race, that one.

Yes, you're right. Secretariat was the first horse I remember watching - I was 10(ish) at the time. I did some quick research. Secretariat still holds the track records at both Churchill Downs and at Belmont. And, his Belmont win is the fastest time recorded on a dirt track of that length ever.

Sports Illustrated did a feature on Secretariat several years after his death. It was the most moving sports biography I'd ever read to that time and since.
