Sofas in yards and on open porches would be outlawed under a proposal designed to relieve Minneapolis neighborhoods of tackiness.
"Our city can either look good or it can look tacky, and tacky is not what we want," said City Council President Barbara Johnson before the council's regulatory committee approved the measure banning upholstered furniture and mattresses outdoors.
Council Member Cam Gordon, who represents some University of Minnesota neighborhoods, unsuccessfully argued for exempting open porches from the ban. He said people relaxing on porches create a good atmosphere that puts more eyes on the street.
Existing nuisance controls could be used to order the removal of problem porch furniture, he said.

The (liberal) city council doesn't realize that the outdoor couch crowd is their support base.
Keith Ellison should be weighing in on this, shortly....
Send them to ColumbASS. They know how to properly dispose of couches.
We don’t allow that in our development either.
Who wants to look at someone old sofa on the front lawn?
We sure don’t nor are we paying outrageous taxes in NJ to live in a dump development. Talk about bringing property prices down ... that’s one sure way to do it and attract more household junkyards.
(though one should put the couches away at night as I've seen some on fire late at night.)
Oh, I agree. Whole-heartedly....
But, this will be a vote-loser for the libs in Minneapolis...
So padded patio furniture would be illegal? A chase lounge in the sun is one of summer’s many joys.
Liberal couch-control...
They have all but elected Al Franken and they’re worried about how outdoor sofas will make them look?
So that’s where Looter guy lives.
Tacky? You want tacky? Here's tacky!
I’ll donate 30 each 5 gallon buckets to help replace them!
I know....I know....
Um....I take it you haven’t been into some of the “finer” areas of Minneapolis. We are not talking about developed communities where people actually care about property values.
This is about micro-managing cr*p and appearing to do something while Rome burns. Mayor RT Rybak and his valiant city council are arming themselves with Windex-sized squirt bottles to put the fire out.
Oh oh. There goes your spring decoratin’
There’s madness in the water up there in Muzziesota.
If I don’t make the next cut in mid-April.....I’m looking for a new home state...
I am registered at the red-star so I decided to take your comment to their message board (3rd page).
It will probably be deleted soon so here it is...
Are you kidding me?
A couple of couches on porches actually embarrasses the "fine" people of Minneapolis? This, from the same people that have all but seated Al Franken AKA "Stewart Smalley" to represent our state in the senate? The funny thing is that these "stale porch-couch dwellers" are most likely the exact people that voted for Al (probably a couple of times).
