Mother slept while Luling toddler was mauled, killed by pit bull

The Central Texas toddler attacked and killed by a pit bull wandered into a backyard with the dog while his mother slept.

18-month-old Tyson Miller died Thursday in Luling.

Police say the child woke up before any of the adults in the house and walked outside through an open door.

His mother, Melissa Miller, woke up between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m. She told police she searched the house then went to the backyard and discovered her son with severe wounds to his head and neck.

Police say it appeared the child had been dead for "a while" but they don't know how long.

Miller and her son had been living at the home on Hackberry Street for about two weeks with her boyfriend. A friend of Miller's boyfriend, Amanda Ayala, had asked him to keep the dog there. It was chained during the attack.

Police say the dog does not have a history of aggressiveness or complaints.

Ayala has signed a voluntary euthanasia order for the animal.

The Caldwell County District Attorney will investigate the incident.

Authorities tell CBS 42 Reporter Katherine Stolp the child had bite marks covering his body. The two year old was already dead, when police found him lying in the back yard behind a mobile home. Also, in the back, police found a female pit bull chained to the ground.

And then the kicker.....

An autopsy is planned for later this week to determine the exact cause of the child’s death.

Hmmmm, let me guess.......Cause of death was the pit bull's bites, right?

What are we paying these people for for G*ds sake?

Morons!!!!!

And my neighbor’s Golden Retriever would have savaged him unmercifully. Right. . .

I wish people would take seriously the damage that all dogs can do and particularly larger dogs. This required no searching by me, I was listening to the radio when the news of the attack broke...

Child attacked by Golden Retriever

TheStar.com - News - Child attacked by Golden Retriever

Tamara Cherry
Staff Reporter

A 3-year-old Oshawa girl was taken to The Hospital for Sick Children this afternoon after being bitten in the face by a Golden Retriever.

Emergency crews were called to a home in the Thorton Rd. N. and Rossland Rd. W. area where the youngster was attacked while playing outside with the dog just after 12 p.m., Durham Region police spokesperson Dave Selby said.

"The little girl (was) at the neighbour's house being babysat and the dog (was) at the house being dog-sat," Selby said. "At some point she was bitten in the cheek."

The girl was taken to Oshawa General Hospital but has since been transferred to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children [by air ambulance], said Duty Inspector Scott Burns, adding he's never heard of a dog attack involving a Golden Retriever. While the child's injuries are considered non life-threatening, "it's a serious bite to the face," Selby said. No charges have been laid, but the dog has been seized by animal control, Selby said.

Oops. Bad example for a pit defender.

“When the officer approached the scene, the dog turned on him and was “euthanized”, according to the incident log.”

Hopefully this little one will live...

Oops. Bad example for a pit defender.

I AM NOT A PIT BULL DEFENDER,
I am an advocate of responsible dog ownership.

I gave Chet two links to dogs attacks in the last couple of days so he could post them. He has not done so. He, for some reason doesn't exhibit the same concern for victims when there is not a "pit bill" involved.

If he had posted them I would be doing the same thing I'm doing now, trying to analysis the attacks and discuss ways in which they could be prevented.

As for the police officer's statement. I don't either expect him to be an expert on dog bites nor familiar with every attack that takes place in the city of Oshawa.

And if I was concerned about it, how then should I react in the case posted here when according to a related source, "This is a first for us," said Chief Cochran."

While the child's injuries are considered non life-threatening, "it's a serious bite to the face," Selby said.

Notice the key words here: "non-life threatening".

Even if a pit bull is no more likely to attack then another breed, the same analogy could be made using a rocket-launcher and a handgun. The rocket-launcher may be no more likely to be fired than the handgun ... but if fired, the damage is going to different.

We would really would need to run double blind tests with live children, by each dog type and sex and then under different approaches, wouldn’t we? Other wise it’s all just junk for those susceptible to sloppy...’papers’. I wouldn’t ever call them studies. It’s all just slightly glorified bias, cargo culting as some sort of science. But then, any adult would know that.

Maybe the ‘mother’ should stop sleeping around with ‘boyfriends’ and take care of her child. Eighteen months old and wandering around while she was ‘sleeping’. Sure.

You're blaming this on the dog?

Wow.

And it's must have...

Making a decision to own a dog or having children are equally serious. Some people shouldn't be allowed to have either.

Blah blah blah...sweet lovable dogs who only turn agressive when raised by career criminals...blah blah blah.

Not! It appears to me they were bred to kill.

Intersting article. Makes sense. However, I’d still much rather walk up to a chained black lab than a chained pitbull or chow. Some breeds are just meaner than others.

I think it depends on the dog, and the kind of life he’s given. My 2 year old daughter bit our pit mix on the tail today, and he just rolled over and looked smug while she got a spanking.
But then, we don’t chain him, he’s excercised every day, etc. Lifestyle makes a huge difference.

The smarter the dog, the more dangerous they are when chained.Chows, pitbulls and other “smart “ dogs are harder to train as they seem to think for their selves instead of what they are told. Also, some breeds are one owner dogs as they do not give loyalty to other people. All dogs are capable of being vicious and violent, some require more dicipline than others. That being said, some dogs, not breeds, just like some people, are mentaly deranged and just plain evil.

To: Thank You Rush

Maybe she worked nights? Altho I had the first same thought as you. When I had young kids I figured it was my job to be up when they were up (altho I used to try to take a nap when they did, however I took it in their bedroom with them so I would wake up if they should wake).
As for the dog, It could have easily been a chow or a shepherd or rottie etc. Any large dog could have killed the child. And the dog should be euthanized, absolutely.

Some dogs see children as prey. FWIW I was bitten by one of my goldens years ago. She was euthanized that day.
