All of the Storm Drain Grates on my street have been replaced. There was nothing wrong with the old ones that I could tell. But they didn't have the admonition, "DUMP NO WASTE / DRIANS TO WATERWAY" in raised letters in the iron or whatever it is they use to make these things.
I discovered this only today, because today was the first day this year that the weather permitted an outside cigar walk. They repaved the street sometime and it was probably during this project that the new grates were installed. Pictures below:

(The new one is the one on the left if it isn't obvious.)
I wonder where the town fathers thought we thought the water drained to! Politicians are all so brilliant and we are all so stupid.

I would not make that logical assumption when it comes to city employees. Last summer they paved the gravel alley behind my house. Two months later they installed new sewage drain pipes. They had to dig up the new pavement, then repave the affected cut areas.
Unbelievable!
Being someone who used to ride bicycles quite a lot, I thought about this. But my street is not exactly one where bicycle riders are pinned to the side of the road. Nice try.

“DUMP NO WASTE / DRIANS TO WATERWAY”
Exactly
Which is why they should be making as few decisions for the people as possible.

This crap grates on my nerves.
My last cyclecommute route took me up a winding BUSY road up a hill (I was passing the cars) but it had a couple of those old ones right in my path. I hated those.
My street was the only one of the four in my little subdivision where this has been done. I just walked around the corner and snapped a picture there.

That is the way they ALWAYS work
You're right! Sorry.

Looks like a big improvement and the top part has rounded edges.
No, it's to make house painters feel stupid when they dump their waste into the storm sewer.
I've seen them do it. (And the ones I accosted weren't illegal aliens).
Have you checked to see if Obama is planning a Town Hall meeting near you?
What’s a storm drain?
Just kidding!
1- Why do you have a picture of the old ones?
2- If it were me, I would have made a call to the city engineer and asked why. Then posted the reasons on here if the reason was even remotely interesting (which it isn’t)!
3- Get a life.
My 2 cents....
....Bob
In my neck of the woods (Bronx, NY) quite a few of the manhole covers say,"MADE IN INDIA"!
So who is being stimulated?
Here’s my hunch.
on the old ones, look at the size of the gap between the curb portion and the street grate. Vermin are known to crawl in there and make a home. Things like raccoons and skunks. The new one has a much smaller gap. I’d say it’s to keep the coons and skunks out.
Here’s another possibility...
something in the substructure is damaged and needs to be replaced. The old style grate is no longer available and the new substructure parts are not compatible with the old cast grates and curbs.
Notice the new grate appears to be different dimensions...it’s larger.
Why do you have a picture of the old ones?
I have a picture of an old one (singular) for the reason I stated at post #28.
If it were me, I would have made a call to the city engineer and asked why. Then posted the reasons on here if the reason was even remotely interesting (which it isnt)!
If it is of no interest to you I guess I'm wondering why you posted to this thread instead of skipping it. Do you post to every thread, or just to the ones of no interest to you? Over 30 posts preceded yours which indicates to me that there is some interest in my observation.
Get a life.
I have one. I observe the world around me. I don't just walk around brain dead.
