“Personal Package Archives (PPA) allow you to upload Ubuntu source packages to be built and published as an apt repository by Launchpad.”

Presumably you have written an application; this allows you to upload the source to a location where it will be built and made available along with other packages that can be downloaded and installed using the “apt” package manager (or managers such a Kubuntu’s “Adept” that build on apt).

I have just put up 9.04 Alpha 6 64 bit version and it seems a bit quicker...by a tad....but what I really like is how much better the Freerepublic pages look...not quite sure just what is different...although I think they have a new Xorg at least...but it really is more readable for me at least.

I also have a 32 version of 8.10 up ...see the thread on Super Ubuntu...and it is good....

I am running both on a Phenom AMD 2.2 Ghz with 4 Gigabyte of Ram,...

a learning curve

Just an update from the release notes on Alpha 6:

***************************EXCERPT***********************

X.Org server 1.6

The latest X.Org server, version 1.6, is available in Jaunty. For a little while, this will again cause increased instability for some users while the proprietary video drivers catch up.

Font size optimization

Font dot-per-inch settings are now optimized based on your monitor's capabilities, rather than defaulting to 96 dpi. You can further customize your dpi settings via System → Preferences → Appearance → Fonts → Details...

I have friends that had old computers that they were going to replace etc and I told em to try 8.10 and they were very very happy at what I believe is a life extension OS for older hardware that in some cases makes a old cpu faster than new and improved for surfin the net .

I took a friends tower and cleaned it up real good, added a cooling fan and cleaned the HD and installed 8.10 and gave it back. We hooked it up, got her on line showed her what and where and how and she was hooked on ubuntu !

Stay Safe !

You do realize that GNOME is far different now than it was back in the 1.0 release days?

So how can you hold some dislike of GNOME 1.0 against the current version of GNOME?

And there is this:

Medibuntu

**************************EXCERPT INTRO******************************

Medibuntu (Multimedia, Entertainment & Distractions In Ubuntu) is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution for legal reasons (copyright, license, patent, etc).

Some of these packages include the libdvdcss package from VideoLAN and the external binary codecs package (commonly known as w32codecs) used by MPlayer and xine.
