What's the alope and area you wont to plant a garden?
It's still early but as soon as there's a thaw, clear out the area getting rid of the maples and rubbish trees giving light to the clearing. It helps if you can broadcast annual rye (which is cheap) over the area, then till it under just before summer starts. You'll add Nitrogen and organic matter to the soil ahead of time. (BTW, I'm not an organic farmer.)
Got any wood ashes from the fireplace or any other source? Save 'em and spread 'em. This'll help condition the soil and add P and K to the mixture.
If you can, take a soil sample to the local college ag dept. or county agent. The readout will give you numbers which will help you buying admendments. (This is Step 1)
