Surviving the Great Depression
Bread Lines

The gaity of the 1920s faded into the gloom of the Great Depression. Beginning with the 1929 Stock Market crash, the Great Depression would linger on through the 1930s. By 1932 a quarter of the civilian labor force was unemployed, banks were failing, families were dispossessed, and in the land of plenty, Americans were going hungry. Bread lines began to form in American cities by 1930. Capitalism itself was on trial.

Causes of the Great Depression or What happened to prosperity?
# Underlying Structural Weaknesses of the Economy Over-dependency on industries such as the automobile, consumer buying, and construction to sustain prosperity.
# Maldistribution of income-too much to those on the top of the income scale, too little to those on the bottom.
# Lack of purchasing power by farmers, workers, and after 1930, an increasingly large number of the middle class.
# A weak banking and credit system.
# Unstable international economy—the German reparations, Allied debts, American bankers’ loans—High Tariffs.
Wall Street Crash
Speculation on the stock market and buying on margin contributed to the 1929 Stock Market crash. Not only did the crash shatter business confidence, it also acted as a catalyst exposing the structural weaknesses of the economy. [For a discussion of the crash, see ]

Preparedness Hints
More About Wheat

Personal and Family Preparedness

Vision: Each family uses principles of provident living in their daily lives.

Mission: “Increase awareness and practice of home production and storage.

Some of you may not be
“converted” to wheat and
exclusively use white flour. So,
this issue will talk specifically
about the benefits of whole
wheat flour versus white flour.

First of all, whole wheat flour
can be made at home from
properly stored wheat which
can be stored for a long time.

White flour must be purchased
as such and doesn’t store
nearly as well as whole wheat.

Second, white flour is highly
processed from the whole
grain. The specific end in mind
is to create a commercial
product that won’t turn rancid
or spoil, something that
nutritious whole grain flour will
do.

I am taking the following
information from “Making the
Best of Basics” by James
Talmage Stevens. There was a
study conducted that
compared equal-sized slices of
white bakery bread and
homemade wheat bread.
It identified all the vitamins,
minerals, amino acids, and
calories. Computer calculations
showed that it would take 130
slices of white bread to equal
the nutrition of 1 slice of
homemade whole-wheat bread.

Finally, I will quote a story told
in the same book.

“Have you ever seen a trail of
ants? The next time you see
such a trail, gather some
children or curious adults and
do this scientific experiment.

Merely take a quarter cup of
white bleached flour from the
sack in your kitchen and make
or lay a strip barrier across the
ant’s trail. As the ants march
along their trail, you’ll notice
they move with great speed.

However, when they reach the
flour barrier, they’ll begin to
make crazy little circles in a
seeming fit of confusion.

Ultimately, an ant scout will find
the outer edge of the flour
barrier and all the ants will
follow the scout back to the
other side of the flour strip. They
resume their orderly trail speed
and continue on their path.

“To finish the experiment, use
the same amount of fresh ground
whole-wheat flour and
make a similar barrier strip 3-4
feet away from the white flour
strip. With a magnifying glass,
you should be able to see the
ants within 12 to 18 inches turn
their heads toward the whole
wheat. They’ll literally stop in
their tracks, turn around and go
back to the whole-wheat flour
and devour it!”

The son, of the author of this
story lives in Texas where
garden pests are a problem. He
relates how proud he is of his
organic garden because it had
no insect problems. He said
they only buy white bleached
flour to put in his dust gun to
dust his vegetables and its the
most effective treatment he’s
found for keeping the pests at
bay!”

The point of all this is to
hopefully convince you to store
and use whole wheat as part of
your home storage program. It
is inexpensive, easy to use,
and very nutritious.

Snipped from an excellent article on survival.....

Emergency lighting in a vehicle is also necessary. As I said, we have a Coleman lamp in the truck at all times, but we also have a box of 12-inch candles and a good flashlight as well. Having light in the vehicle can provide cheer but more important, it may prevent your rig from being hit by a passing motorist as well as greatly improving your chances of having someone see your problem and stop to help.

continues.....

This made me think of the solar lights.

LOL, and I took the thought a step further.

If one could place the light “just so”, it charged in the day and then the interior of the car stayed lighted at night, there would be less car thiefs, for the next thought would be,
“ they will take a photo of me, so lets go to the next ‘dark’ car.”

If one lived in town and had a car parked on the street or in a lot, it might be worth it, at the least, the mystery light would insure that everyone watched the car....

Delicious Whole Wheat
Cinnamon Rolls and Pancakes

Personal and Family Preparedness
Vision: Each family uses principles of provident living in their daily lives.

Mission: “Increase awareness and practice of home production and storage.

Making homemade cinnamon
rolls seems to be a staple in
many homes. We make ours
with 1/2 whole wheat flour and
they are delicious. We enjoy
making these on Sunday and
do it at least once a month. Part
of the trick to keeping them soft
is adding lemon juice. The
recipe I use follows.

Did you know what the
difference is between bread
flour and all-purpose flour? I
looked at the ingredients and
noticed that the only difference
is ascorbic acid! Yes,
essentially the same thing as
lemon juice. Ascorbic acid or
lemon juice softens the gluten
developed while bread making.
So you can buy all-purpose
flour and add your own lemon
juice when making bread rolls,
or pizza dough.

Cinnamon Rolls (modified
from simply Ready by Terri
Johnson)

• 1 C. butter or margarine, melted
• 1/2 c. sugar or honey
• 3 eggs, beaten
• 1 t. salt
• 2 T. yeast & 1 t sugar dissolved in 1
In C. warm water
• 2 T. lemon juice or vinegar
• 3 C. whole wheat flour
• 3 C. white flour (or wheat flour)
• 3/4 C. brown sugar mixed with 4 t.
cinnamon (raisins, nuts)
Add butter, sugar, eggs, salt &
lemon juice to dissolved yeast
and stir. Add 3 C, of the wholewheat
flour and beat in mixer or
by hand for 10 minutes.

Add
rest of the flour and mix until
flour is absorbed (or longer). Be
careful not to add too much
flour, you want the dough to be
as soft as you can manage.

Roll out into a large rectangle. (I
use spray Pam on my hands
and on the board, I avoid using
any more flour if I can help it).

Spread with 2 T. melted butter.
Sprinkle with the brown sugar
mixture and raisins and nuts if
desired. Roll up so that you
have a long skinny roll (not a
short fat one). Slice into about
24 rolls and put into two 9x13
pans. Let rise until double
(about 43 minutes) and cook at
350º F. for 20 minutes.

Cream Cheese Icing

• 8 Oz. cream cheese, kept
cold
• 5 T. butter
• 2 t. vanilla
• 2 C. powdered sugar.

Process in a food processor
until just mixed. Over mixing
causes the cream cheese to
break down and produces
grainy looking frosting (Joy of
Cooking, 1997, pg. 1008) Frost
while still slightly warm.

Whole Wheat Pancakes

• 2 C. whole wheat flour
• 2 T. sugar
• 1 T. baking powder
• 1 t. salt
• 1/2 t soda
• 2 C. milk
• 1/4 C. oil
• 2 eggs

Mix dry ingredients together.

Add liquid ingredients and mix
just until moistened (do not
over beat, thereby creating
gluten, making tough
pancakes). Cook on griddle at
350 (not 375 like for white flour
pancakes). Makes about 24
pancakes.

We love these, especially with
our chokecherry syrup!

The titles are links to the articles.

I am hearing more and more kidnappings on the police scanners, but you do not hear of them in the general news.

They are going on all over the country, do some digging and be surprised.

granny......

http://www.ssrsi.org/ta1/kidnap.htm

Preparation is SAFETY: You’re driving down a street in São Paulo, Brazil and you are no more than five minutes from your home when you notice that you are being followed. Suddenly, the car passes you and abruptly pulls in front of your car causing you to slam on your brakes. Four men jump out with firearms and approach you. Frozen with fear you sit there not being able to move or speak. They forcibly remove you from the driver’s seat, bind your hands, duct tape your mouth, blindfold you and throw you into the trunk of their car. You then feel the car exhilarate down the road at a high speed, taking you to some remote location. You have just been abducted – and yes, it can happen that quickly.

Surviving a Kidnapping by Duncan Long Anyone may be kidnapped or have a member of their family kidnapped. Unfortunately, most people don’t know how to deal with kidnappers or how to survive the ordeal if they themselves are kidnapped or taken hostage.

How to Survive Kidnapping - Travel Tips Kidnapping is rampant in many parts of the world — in fact it is a thriving business in many countries. The U.S. Government provides tips on what you should do when things go bad. The following is excerpted from DEPARTMENT OF STATE PUBLICATION 10217: Security Awareness Overseas, An Overview [Bureau of Diplomatic Security - United States Department of State Overseas Security Advisory Council].

Foreign Policy Centre: Publications / THE KIDNAPPING BUSINESS The nature of kidnapping is changing: an important political tool is now a sophisticated business and the gap left by policy-makers has been filled by kidnap and ransom insurance. This project assesses these new trends and works towards a new integrated policy response. This project is supported by Hiscox, Control Risks Group, ASM, SCR and J&H Marsh and McLennan.

Police learning to deal with kidnapping China is seeing a surge in hostage crises. The Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolis Daily reports that there have been more than 20 reported cases in the past year. Things have exacerbated in the past two months, with almost weekly stories of armed kidnapping.

Armchair World: Guidelines to Survive a Kidnapping Kidnappings can take place in public areas where someone may quietly force you, by gunpoint, into a vehicle. They can also take place at a hotel or residence, again by using a weapon to force your cooperation in leaving the premises and entering a vehicle. The initial phase of kidnapping is a critical one because it provides one of the best opportunities to escape.

Fielding’s DangerFinder - Kidnapping - You’re in Good Hands The kidnapping and occasional executions of travelers by such groups as the PKK in Turkey, Al-Faran in Kashmir, FARC in Colombia, the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, make big headlines but don’t reflect the real dangers of kidnapping. Even the recent kidnappings of nuns in Sierra Leone, oil workers in Yemen, researchers in Irian Jaya, journalists in Chechnya, or UN workers in Tajikistan don’t properly convey the real threat of being kidnapped. The reality is that only one out of 10 kidnappings become public knowledge. Also, it generates extremely good business. If you happen to find yourself as one of the 200 foreigners who get kidnapped every year, there’s little for you to do but hope that you’ll be well treated.

California - Teens survive nightmare - sacbee.com The kidnapping started when Ratliff approached a parked car on a lovers’ lane about 1 a.m. and forced a couple out at gunpoint. Then, he forced another couple out of a second parked car, said Parra, and used duct tape to bind the two men. He ordered the two girls, 16 and 17, into the Bronco that belonged to one of the male victims, Eric Brown.

News: Kidnapped: How to survive? - myDNA DOD experts advise hostages to try as much as possible to establish a rapport with their captors by finding some type of common ground. Bringing up topics like family, sports or hobbies may prove to be lifesaving. This helps the detainee to be viewed as a human being rather than just an object.

Stranger Danger: Protecting Your Child “Don’t talk to strangers!” It’s the advice we grew up with and the advice we give our children. Unfortunately, that advice just doesn’t cut it today. Our children face danger not only on the streets but on the Internet, at the park, in shopping malls, and practically everywhere they go. Children of service members face a few additional challenges. As parents, we must empower our children with tools to protect themselves.

Elaine Cassel: The Case of Elizabeth Smart The FBI categorizes kidnappings according to the relationship of the perpetrator to the victim: family member, acquaintance, or stranger. Most perpetrators of child kidnappings are parents or acquaintances. Strangers account for less than a quarter of child abductions.

Kidnapping Survival Guidelines The chances of your being kidnapped or taken hostage are small. If it does happen, your chances of survival are high. Kidnapping is a terrifying experience, but you probably possess more personal resources than you think to cope with the situation. Remember, you are of value to those who are holding you only if you are alive, and they want to keep you that way. Your best defense is passive cooperation. The more time passes, the better your chances of being released alive.

Legal Handbook On Kidnapping This publication is intended to be used by people who are genuinely concerned that their child might be kidnapped or, sadly, whose child has been kidnapped by a former spouse, partner, or other family member. Perhaps this information will provide some ideas of what to do, where to go, and what kinds of things can be done to try to prevent a kidnapping or to help get the child safely returned. While much of the material in this publication focuses on children who have been taken out of the country, most of the information also is applicable to cases in which the child remains in the United States.

CNN.com - Kidnapping and ransom on the rise - Feb. 19, 2004 Kidnapping for ransom or politics has long been a hazard of executive travel for global businesses. And over the last few years it has been getting worse, despite efforts to curb the problem.

Kidnapped teen’s family describes safety pin escape A 13-year-old boy left bound and gagged in a remote patch of Florida countryside used a safety pin, a stick and his teeth to free himself from captivity, his family said Tuesday.

Kidnapping; Latin American Growth Industry Thanks to increased opportunity, weak law enforcement and the continued disparity between the poor and the wealthy, the abduction of business executives is a growth industry in Latin America. According to estimates by the highly-respected New York-based Kroll Associates security firm, there were at least 6,000 kidnappings in Latin America in 1995. Kroll is highly informed in the matters of kidnapping. They offer kidnapping and ransom advice to insurance companies and victims. Their statistics show that business executives are increasingly becoming the targets of kidnappers. Statistics show that Latin America is ranked, by far, the most dangerous area in the world in terms of kidnapping. The region is well ahead of the Middle East and Asia. Six years of economic growth in Latin America has brought more local and foreign business people on the scene. With that are increased opportunities for criminals.

Child Safety – Kidnapping Escape The rule of thumb for kids is: Take three giant steps backward and run as fast as you can in the opposite direction, and then immediately tell a parent or trusted adult what happened. ... Amy Vandegrift knows the child safety drill: If a stranger rides up in a car beckoning to her, she’s to make a beeline in the opposite direction. “You scream and get your friends to call 911,’’ says the 11-year-old. ... “Nothing takes the place of parental or trusted adult supervision and attention,” says Nancy McBride, director of prevention education at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. “Obviously, that’s true for younger children, but it’s just as true for older children.... There’s no book, no video, no gimmick you can buy that can take the place of that.” Excerpted from The Christian Science Monitor – 29 July 2002

Survival Options - Kidnapping The best kidnapping survival strategy is to immediately prevent the kidnapping and avoid worse survival odds at a second crime scene.

You will not realize how many bombs go off each day in the U.S., unless you look for the information.

Some of it makes the news, but not all, for I have heard detailed police reports and watched the news for a report, but it never got reported.

I have heard them investigate and find the pieces and bombs that did not go off, in cars, trash cans, under oil pipe lines and any place you can place them, including ice chests, brown paper lunch bags and black plastic trash sacks that were found floating in a lake.

Or the small boat, set adrift in the Seattle harbor, a fisherman managed to hook what he thought was a boat that had drifted off and towed it into the dock, only to discover it was full of explosives, waiting to get shoved against a ship.

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) / Booby Traps An IED can be almost anything with any type of material and initiator. It is a “homemade” device that is designed to cause death or injury by using explosives alone or in combination with toxic chemicals, biological toxins, or radiological material. IEDs can be produced in varying sizes, functioning methods, containers, and delivery methods. IEDs can utilize commercial or military explosives, homemade explosives, or military ordnance and ordnance components.

Potential Indicators of Threats Involving Vehicle Borne IED’s The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) believes that a truck bombing by terrorists may be preempted if the general public remains alert for certain indicators. DHS has no specific information to indicate that a truck bombing of any kind is currently being planned in the United States. This document is only intended to provide general information to assist in efforts to recognize potential VBIED-related threats or incidents based on the recent Riyadh bombings.

Improvised Device Defeat The Improvised Device Defeat (IDD) Subgroup delivers advanced technologies, tools, and information to increase the operational capabilities of the United States military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community and federal, state, and local bomb squads to defeat and mitigate terrorist devices. In collaboration with military, federal, state, and local agencies, the IDD subgroup identifies, validates, and prioritizes multi-agency user requirements through an ongoing generation and prioritization process.

EXPLOSIVE FORCES OF IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICES Before anyone can start to study these events and digest the design, construct, and methods chosen by terrorists, it is most important to understand the basics of explosives, explosive forces, and how they work.

IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICES During the 18th and 19th of October, it was held the first NATO International Symposium “On Countering Improvised Explosive Devices” in Madrid. In the frame of the Conference of National Armament Directors (CNAD) for Defense Against Terrorism (DAT), Spain assumed the leading role on the topic “On Countering Improvised Explosive Devices”. As a first step within this leading initiative, the Spanish Directorate of Armament assumed the organization of the Symposium. This assignment supposed a challenge for the Directorate, that has been successfully overcome within very short time, thanks to the thrust of his director, Lieutenant General Carlos Villar Turrau.

Protecting People and Facilities From Improvised Explosive Devices ... Pipe Bombs and other Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) pose a serious threat to federal, state, and local government facilities considering how easily and inexpensively they can be put together. Schools, shopping malls, stadiums and other public places are also potential targets for terrorist attacks considering how freely people can walk around and through these types of public facilities.

Detection of Command-Initiated Improvised Explosive Devices Using ... All active electronic devices radiate electromagnetic energy. Radio receivers (not just the transmitters) may be significant sources of electromagnetic radiation. The radiation from radio receivers might be used to detect improvised electronic devices (IEDs) as the receiver must be active to function, as electrical activity is easily coupled to the receiver antenna and then radiated, and as the radiated signal is often unique to the receiver.

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and Convoy Protection Improvised explosive devices are currently being used to target coalition forces/personnel soft targets, HUMVEEs and other thin-skinned vehicles. Insurgents typically plant the devices along major supply and travel routes, usually under cover of darkness, and detonate them remotely as the target vehicles pass. As a result, IEDs represent a relatively low-risk means for mounting attacks.

Landmines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED’s) The following method can be used by soldiers in areas where landmines and IED’s are prevalent (like Afghanistan and Iraq). Scroll down to view “Video Clips”). Used correctly, soldiers will give themselves at least a few steps before encountering the mine. We have used the method effectively for years in the environmental (buried drums, pipelines, wellheads, etc.) and archeological (pottery, grave sites, fences, etc.) fields. The technique involves a few wires or rods that can be carried in one’s shirt or coat pocket. Conventional landmine detection equipment is heavy, bulky, expensive, limited to metals and available to a few highly-trained individuals only. The basic technology has not changed since its origin in the 1940’s.

Infantry Weapons - Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Improvised Explosive Devices (or IED’s) may be created using various household chemicals or military components in the right combustible combinations. Various packages can also be used to deliver the bomb - from paper bags and steel pipes (pipe bombs) to card board boxes and milk crates. Other packages that have been used include mortar and howitzer shells.

JURY-RIGGED: Improvised Explosive Devices Simple to make yet difficult to stop, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are proving perfect weapons for insurgents. In Iraq, the U.S. military is searching frantically for high-tech answers to combat these low-tech weapons.

Sappers Become Improvised Explosive Device Hunters in Iraq When soldiers conduct convoys in Iraq, they try to watch out for and stay far away from improvised explosive devices. For the Sappers of Company B, 65th Engineer Battalion attached to Task Force 1- 27 Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, it’s a little different. When the Sappers perform route clearances, their intent is to hunt down these IEDs and make sure they get destroyed.

Miscellaneous Explosives Used As Improvised Explosive Devices

Terrorist weapons; Bombs (IED) One of the preferred weapons of the modern (and historical) terrorist is the bomb or Improvised Explosive Device (IED). As a terrorist weapon bombs are perfect allowing the terrorist to strike at considerable distance with great destructive effect and most importantly be nowhere near when the bomb goes off. Bombs are ideal for attacks carried out for the Propaganda of the Deed, as they can be very destructive but by using coded warnings the terrorists can choose to reduce or even eliminate civilian casualties.

IED (Improvised Explosive Device) Game - IED Vigilance: www.IEDVigilance.com features a serious game designed to teach techniques for defeating IEDs, or Improvised Explosive Devices. These devious booby traps can be injurious or fatal if not detected and disarmed, destroyed or avoided.

Scary Explosive - Easy construction of an IED Device This clip shows how easy a IED device can be constructed and shows the power of just one drop of binary explosive. Pretty scary.

Invasive Threats to the American Homeland by ROBERT J. PRATT; From Parameters, Spring 2004, pp. 44-61.: Before 11 September 2001, when American leaders prepared for war they envisioned enemies using bombs, tanks, guns, military force, and other traditional armaments. The attacks on that fateful day forever changed the way the United States and the world would view the nature of war. Using four hijacked commercial jetliners, terrorists attacked the United States, killing some 3,000 men and women. This surprise attack was not a symmetric attack, but an asymmetric one. Furthermore, a non-state entity conducted this attack at a relatively low cost of under $500,000.1 However, that may have been just the beginning. The success of the attack, and the devastation inflicted on the nation at a relatively low cost, will doubtless inspire our adversaries to continue to employ asymmetric methods to threaten and weaken the United States. Among those methods may be the introduction of an invasive species, a disease pathogen, or some other biological threat.

The Dark Winter exercise portrayed a FICTIONAL scenario depicting a covert smallpox attack on US citizens. The scenario is set in three successive National Security Council (NSC) meetings (Segments 1,2 and 3) which take place over a period of 14 days. Former senior government officials played the roles of NSC members responding to the evolving epidemic; representatives from the media were among the observers of these mock NSC meetings and played journalists during the scenario’s press conferences (see Participant List). The exercise itself was held at Andrews Air Force Base, Washington, D.C. on June 22-23, 2001. The Dark Winter exercise was the collaborative effort of four organizations. John Hamre of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) initiated and conceived of an exercise wherein senior former officials would respond to a bioterrorist induced national security crisis. Identifying Chemical and Biological Agents Learn the characteristics of these substances and their effects. Chemical/biological agents are defined as toxic substances, pathogens or toxins that are used to kill or incapacitate people, animals or plants, or to damage equipment. The use of these agents dates as far back as 429 B.C. when the Spartans ignited pitch and sulphur creating toxic vapors in the Peloponnesian War. This article discusses the types of chemical and biological agents and their effects. See also: Chemical Agents Chart (.pdf) requires Adobe Acrobat.

#227- Tutorial: Chemical and Biological Agents Chemical and biological (CB) agents pose a threat to U.S. and allied military forces. Unfortunately, what strictly used to be a military risk has now become a concern to the civilian population—brought about by terrorist groups and other factions with developed CB capabilities. As a result, national, state and local authorities have initiated domestic preparedness against CB terrorism. Although the probability of a terrorist CB attack is low, it’s important to have an understanding of the potentially devastating and far-reaching effects of these agents.

Positive test for terror toxins in Iraq SARGAT, Iraq, April 4 — MSNBC.com tests reveal evidence of the deadly toxins ricin and botulinum at a laboratory in a remote mountain region of northern Iraq allegedly used as a terrorist training camp by Islamic militants with ties to the al-Qaida terrorist network. The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency is conducting its own tests at the same area, but has not yet released the results, according to officials in northern Iraq.

Is nation ready for botulinum attack? Experts fear trouble ahead (CNN.com) WASHINGTON (AP) — Easy to find and easy to produce, botulinum toxin is the most poisonous natural substance on Earth. In the hands of a bioterrorist, a single gram — the weight of a paper clip — could kill more than 1 million people.

Botulinum Toxin as a Biological Weapon: Medical & Public Health Management An aerosolized or foodborne botulinum toxin weapon would cause acute symmetric, descending flaccid paralysis with prominent bulbar palsies such as diplopia, dysarthria, dysphonia, and dysphagia that would typically present 12 to 72 hours after exposure. Effective response to a deliberate release of botulinum toxin will depend on timely clinical diagnosis, case reporting, and epidemiological investigation. Persons potentially exposed to botulinum toxin should be closely observed, and those with signs of botulism require prompt treatment with antitoxin and supportive care that may include assisted ventilation for weeks or months. Treatment with antitoxin should not be delayed for microbiological testing.

Tularemia as a Biological Weapon: Medical & Public Health Management [JAMA 285(21),2001]

Francisella tularensisis considered a potential bioterrorism agent. An aerosol release would be the most likely method and would result in a large number of pneumonia cases several weeks after exposure.

Why is there concern about tularemia as a bioweapon? Tularemia, in aerosol form, is considered a possible bioterrorist agent. Persons who inhale an infectious aerosol would likely experience severe respiratory illness. Any suspected cases of tularemia inhalation should be immediately reported to local and state health departments.

A pilot clinical trial of a recombinant ricin vaccine in normal humans Ricin, a highly potent toxin produced by castor beans, is classified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a level B biothreat because it is easily produced, readily available, and highly stable. There have been >750 cases of documented ricin intoxication in humans. There is no approved vaccine for ricin.

Ricin poisoning- a comprehensive review The recent discoveries of ricin, a deadly biologic toxin, at a South Carolina postal facility, a White House mail facility, and a US senator’s office has raised concerns among public health officials, physicians, and citizens. Ricinis one of the most potent and lethal substances known, particularly when inhaled. The ease with which the native plant (Ricinus communis) can be obtained and the toxin extracted makes ricinan attractive weapon.

Chemical attack warfare agents, industrial chemicals and toxins New fact sheet from NAS/HHS program News & Terrorism: Communicating in a Crisis.

Facts about Personal Cleaning and Disposal of Contaminated Clothing Some kinds of chemical accidents or attacks may cause you to come in contact with dangerous chemicals. Coming in contact with a dangerous chemical may make it necessary for you to remove and dispose of your clothing right away and then wash yourself. Removing your clothing and washing your body will reduce or remove the chemical so that it is no longer a hazard. This process is called decontamination. Biomonitoring for chemical warfare agents [PDF] This report, which will be updated as necessary, presents a means of assessing the relative threat from terrorist-use of individual chemical, biological, and toxin agents. It focuses on small-scale, targeted chemical and biological attacks, rather than mass-casualty attacks. The framework considers the elements of access, public health impact, medical treatment, prophylaxis, and dissemination. Other factors that may affect potential use by terrorists include the range of lethality, covert employment of an agent, and the availability of dual-use technologies.

Recognition of Illness Associated with Chemical Exposure [Webcast with html script & PDF Slide Show] The goal of this program is to increase the likelihood that physicians and public health professionals will recognize chemical-release-related illness so that public health authorities can implement the appropriate emergency response and public health actions. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to describe: Epidemiologic clues that might suggest the covert release of a chemical agent and . . .the importance of reporting and surveillance in recognizing outbreaks of illness resulting from exposure to chemicals and toxins.

Chemical Terrorism Wall Chart The purpose of the chart is for display for medical personnel in emergency rooms, urgent care centers, physicians’ offices, and other primary care first responders. The chart presents a concise summary of signs and symptoms to assist with early recognition and alert healthcare workers of the potential for chemical terrorism agents. Once a chemical terrorism agent is suspected, the healthcare worker will need to consult more in-depth resources. A Bioterrorism Agents Wall Chart is also available.

Gerald Schumacher — a retired Army officer who had worked on biological and chemical weapons early-detection systems for the Army during the Gulf War — about the threat of biological weapons of mass destruction, what has traditionally been called “the poor man’s nuke.”

Bristol terror suspect had ‘concerning interest in germ warfare’
Monday, June 08, 2009, 15:22

A muslim convert suspected of intending to detonate a suicide bomb in Broadmead also displayed a concerning interest in germ warfare, a court heard.

Winchester Crown Court heard AS level student Isa Ibrahim questioned micro biologist Dr Sarah Maddocks when she gave a lecture into how science could be fun at City of Bristol College in November 2007.

Dr Maddocks told the court that afterwards a student (Ibrahim) approached her, told her that his father was a pathologist who dealt with dead people on a regular basis and a lot have them could have died through bacterial infection.

She told the court: “He had a lot of interest in bacteria. He stated he had been reading books and he knew bacteria had been used to kill people.

“He asked which were the best sorts of bacteria and where they might be found and how they might be used.

“He used Anthrax as an example and I answered his questions in the broadest terms I could.”

Dr Maddocks, who formerly worked at the Government Research Facility at Porton Down, told the court that after fobbing the persistent student off she discussed the matter with her lecturer husband Robert Hawkins, and he reported it to college authorities.

It is claimed 20-year-old Ibrahim became infatuated with the so-called cult of hate against the people of the West, fuelled by Muslim extremists, and he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his 9/11 and 77 hero martyrs by detonating a suicide bomb in the Galleries shopping mall.

Friends said how the drug addict changed his Western-style of dress, grew a long beard and adopted the garb of a Muslim.

When police raided his one-bedroom flat at Comb Paddock, Westbury-on-Trym, in April 2008, in a fridge they found a family-sized biscuit tin containing a home made explosive, an electrical circuit with button detonator and, hanging on the back of a bedroom door, a white cotton vest with panels at the front and back similar to those worn by suicide bombers.

The bomb was called and carried out a controlled explosion of the biscuit tin explosive device in an alleyway near his home.

Ibrahim, a former public schoolboy, denies making an explosive substance with intent, in that he made the explosive hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD) with the intention to endanger life or cause serious injury to property in the UK.

He also denies the preparation of terrorism acts, in that he researched the manufacture of explosives, bought materials to make them, made them and also bought materials to detonate them – as well as identifying a place to do so.

He has pleaded guilty to simply making an explosive substance.

Mr Hawkins told the court he lectured Ibrahim in AS level biology and described him as an “average student” whose attendance was generally good.

He told the jury he invited his partner Dr Maddocks to give the lecture at the college and he was present when Ibrahim asked her questions afterwards.

He said: “His questions were about bacteria and the history of bacteria usage. He mentioned a book he was reading on Anthrax.

“After Christmas I decided to report it to the authorities at the college.”

Mr Hawkins said that from 2008 he noticed Ibrahim had changed from wearing tracksuits to Muslim dress, and he was slightly more chatty in class.

He said: “He would talk about silly things like computer games and programmes like the X Files.

“He never talked to me about his religion or faith. On occasion he was late and said he had been to prayers.”

Earlier Gemma Angell (corr) told the court she was Ibrahim’s project support worker from October 2007 when he had a flat with Priority Youth Housing Association at St Georges House in St Georges Road, Bristol.

She said she was aware Ibrahim followed the Muslim faith and wore Muslim dress, though he wore Western dress of jeans, T-shirts and trainers on occasion – as he was wearing in court.

Miss Angell confirmed that when Ibrahim arrived at the premises he was a user of heroin and crack cocaine and when more fully into his Muslim practices, visiting his mosque five to six times a day, appeared to be using fewer drugs.

She said Ibrahim’s room was very messy and quite dirty, he had issues with some female staff and he would call her “thick” if she made errors like spelling mistakes.

She said: “He was very intelligent. He was very open to debate things, he was very strong in his opinions and he seemed to be well read and well educated.”

Miss Angell recalled how Ibrahim said it was unfair Muslim people were always portrayed as terrorists, but she didn’t enter into conversations on matters in which she had no knowledge.

She told the court Ibrahim had been aiming to study in Birmingham and had wanted to be re-housed to East Bristol, where he felt he had a lot of connections with the Muslim community.

She described how Ibrahim could be “obnoxious” and he was “quite overly-sexualised” with female staff.

She said she had seen Ibrahim spit at someone, but she had not seen him to be violent.

The court heard housing association staff records showed there was an episode when Ibrahim was very distressed after injecting himself in the leg, when his leg turned blue and he was taken to hospital, thinking he would have to have it amputated.

It turned out that what actually happened was dye from his jeans turned his leg blue, the court heard.

Marco Van-Tintelen (corr), a project manager at St Georges House, said he asked Ibrahim to take down an A4 size poster from his wall, which appeared to be two blocks and a broken aircraft representing the 9/11 terrorist attack.

He recalled an incident in which two female residents had bullied Ibrahim, suggesting he had “man boobs” and he was “so sad”.

The case continues.

Skin Products Made by Clarcon
Audience: Consumers, pharmacists, all healthcare professionals
FDA notified consumers and healthcare professionals that Clarcon Biological Chemistry Laboratory is recalling some skin sanitizers and skin protectants because of high levels of disease-causing bacteria found in the product. During an FDA inspection, analyses of samples of several of these products revealed high levels of various bacteria, including some associated with unsanitary conditions. Some of these bacteria can cause opportunistic infections of the skin and underlying tissues. Such infections may need medical or surgical attention, and may result in permanent damage. These findings are particularly concerning because the products are promoted as antimicrobial agents that claim to treat open wounds, damaged skin, and protect against various infectious diseases. FDA is warning consumers to not use any Clarcon products and should throw these products away in household refuse.

1. Healthy Dairy Butter Substitute
Posted by: “Malcolm”

Another Recipe from “Ronda’s Kitchen”:

COCONUT BUTTER

Easier to digest and MUCH healthier than dairy butter or hydrogenated fats in margarine...

In Blender or Vitamix:

1 1/4 cup Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
3/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil (”First Cold Pressed” is the absolute best)
1/3 cup Extra Virgin Flax Oil (may substitute more Olive Oil if don’t have flax oil)
1 cup water
1 Tablespoon (or +) Soy Lecithin
1 Teaspoon (or +) Celtic Salt

Blend, low to medium, thoroughly, until uniform. Will have a yellow-green syrupy consistency.

Pour into tub-like containers (e.g. Pyrex with plastic lid) and into fridge. Let chill down a bit — until firm — before adding lid or will “sweat”.

Let chill overnight.

To use, take out and let warm for 30-45 minutes. Use. (First time out of fridge, stir to make more smooth and creamy, after setting for a bit). Re-chill after use, or will melt down to a syrup again.

For variations, make with favorite spices, herbs, or flavorings. e.g. basil, garlic, Italian seasoning, rosemary, thyme (good with fish), or like fruit or berry flavorings.

Yummy consistency... the coconut undertone takes a bite or two to get used to... after that.. no going back to butter.

Note sure how it would work for baking... will find out!

FREEZES WELL!

Malcolm

1 cup cheddar cheese, Shredded

Cut bacon into small pieces and cook, drain well on paper towels.

Report Finds Direct Marketing Boom
http://www.extension.org/pages/New_AMS_Fact_Sheet_Shows_Direct-to-Consumer_Marketing_Growing_Faster_Than_Total
A new report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) shows direct-to-consumer farm marketing in the United States is growing faster than total agricultural sales. The two categories increased 104.7 percent and 47.6 percent, respectively, from 1997 to 2007. AMS’s Marketing Services Division developed Facts on Direct-To-Consumer Food Marketing (http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/getfile?dDocName=STELPRDC5076729&acct=wdmgeninfo) (PDF/1.3MB) to examine the contribution that direct-to-consumer marketing is making to the food system in different regions of the country. The report compares data from the 2007 Census of Agriculture with those from previous years.

Glossary of Climate Change Words Released
http://www.leopold.iastate.edu/news/newsreleases/2009/060309_glossary.html
A new glossary from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture defines terms like ‘milankovitch cycles’ and ‘eutrophication,’ which could become just as common in climate change discussions in the near future as carbon footprint and acid rain are now. Understanding Common Terms Used in Discussions about Climate Change and Agriculture (http://www.leopold.iastate.edu/research/marketing_files/glossary.pdf) (PDF/2.8MB) is the name of a new resource from the Leopold Center. The glossary was written by Rich Pirog, Leopold Center Associate Director and leader of the Center’s Marketing and Food Systems Initiative, and Rebecca Rasmussen, an MBA student in the ISU College of Business. Following each of the terms are definitions and their sources, as well as places to get more information on the Internet.

Baking Supplies & Ingredients: Organic Honey and Molasses Crystals

Natural Honey and Molasses Crystals

You’ll love these natural, organic crystals. Use them anywhere sugar is called for to add the delightful, subtle flavor of honey or mild molasses to your baked goods. Sprinkle them on your cereal or on an ice cream sundae. Make a honey or molasses syrup to top pancakes or a dessert.

Use them in any recipe that calls for sugar. Substitute natural honey or molasses crystals on a one-for-one basis for all or part of the sugar. Take them camping or stock up the RV. You’ll find hundreds of uses for these wonderful crystals.

Honey and molasses are hygroscopic, that is, they attract moisture rather than drying out. Because they are hygroscopic, they will help keep your baked goods fresher.

These crystals are made from pure organic honey or organic molasses and are dehydrated with organic cane sugar added.

* Take some to the cabin or stash some in the RV.
* Mix this sour cream powder with water to make a creamy sauce the consistency of fresh dairy sour cream.
* Store some in the pantry as a back up to fresh sour cream.

This is a large economy sized package, approximately four cups of powder. This is the best, longest lasting sour cream powder we can buy. We package it in heavy vista zipper-type bags for your convenience. If you are not going to use it within a year, we recommend that you store it in mylar or freeze it.
