It is kind of neat to visit those towns named after our forefathers. Have visited Hollis, Maine and Hollis, Oklahoma both.
A few years ago (well guess it was about 9 or 10 now) I organized a family reunion at St. Mary’s City (where they landed) - They have quite a place with reenactments and all.
Fascinating to see where John Hollis hauled a guy named Brothers into court for calling his wife (Restituta) a whore. Made him apologize to the court and the whole community.
Another time John was chastised by the court for trading with the Indians. Same tribe (Nanticokes) who in the 1970’s made my father Honorary Chief Warhorse for taking on the State government (and winning) against a mercantile tax.
Then about 10 years after my father died, I had a visit by an old pickup driven by a young fellow with an ancient passenger who introduced himself and told me that I needed to really take my heritage seriously - It might have just been an honorary thing to some, but it meant that I had a heritage to live up to as the Son of War Horse. Guess I’m trying...
My mother in law was born in Hollis. Her family (Parkers) had a furniture store there.
