A couple who hadn't been seen since New Year's Eve have been found dead inside their locked bedroom with their crying 9-month-old daughter in an apparent murder-suicide. Three older children had been left out on their own.

It’s a shame if it was a murder-suicide but I could also see this happening from accidental causes, e.g. CO, a poisoned drink that was shared, etc., and if mom & dad keep the bedroom door locked, there you go. You’d think the older kids would react quicker than 3 days though.
How sad ...and how tragic that the 8 year old knew about “passed out”
Not if it wasn’t unusal for them.
Both parents were shot and, apparently, by dad. At least he didn’t waste the kids.
Yeah, these kids didn't seem to think the situation unusual.
At least they spared the innocent; all of them.
I must give them credit for that.
The man was only 21, which makes it unlikely that he's the father of any of the children besides the baby. Maybe that's why he didn't kill them ... no sense of "ownership."
I hope that Smith was thinking far enough a head that he kept the kids at his apartment when he went to investigate so that they did not have to see their parents that way.
Actually a step-dad is much more likely to kill the previous males children than his own.
Yes.
But .. doesn’t CO affect the whole house .. not just a single room ..??
And .. to me such an act of murder/suicide in this manner just reeks of overwhelming selfishness.
You can only be thinking of yourself if you leave a 9 month old baby to fend for itself.
That could be why the baby went to CPS...if the others went to their father’s family.
A couple of murders or murder/suicides in this area in the last few years involved men killing their own children. I think it depends on the circumstances. The cases I’ve seen of men killing their girlfriends’ children by other men are usually just the kids, not the man killing himself too.
I think that’s right, based on the article.
Well. it happened in Madras.. Okay. Ah! it’s a hundred miles form Portland. So it must be in Oregon! no, wait, maybe it’s in Maine or in Connecticut, or Indiana, or maybe Texas. Could it be Portland Arizona? or Portland Colorado? or Florida? Kansas, perhaps?
Terrible and tragic. The poor children!
I wondered, at first, about all the English-speaking people with normal-sounding names living in Madras, India.
people who want to commit murder/suicide should start with the suicide and go on from there.
At the risk of sounding heartless. I do not think they are altogether “poor children”. These parents are quite likely the type who would have raised some really screwed up kids. They probably are getting the biggest break of their life, not withstanding that they have to live with the way their parents died. But, I would offer up my prayers that a loving set of well-balanced people get the privilege of raising these children.
