Fair or not, Penn State carries the Big Ten flag against USC
ESPN ^ | 12/29/08 | Ivan Maisel

If Penn State played in any other league, the question would never be asked. But Penn State joined the Big Ten Conference in 1993, so the question will hover over the Nittany Lions right up until kickoff for the Rose Bowl Game ---SNIP--- he Big Ten is 4-9 in all BCS games in this decade. Seven of those nine losses came by at least 13 points. Only one of the four victories came by more than a touchdown. By contrast, two of the four came in overtime. (

Iowa and many other Big Ten schools played PS before they joined the Big Ten. What’s this about ?

PennState joins the Big Ten and it’s still the Big Ten, even tho’ it’s now 11......

Why isn’t PS in some eastern conference??

I guess they figgered they could win more games in a weaker conference.....

The ‘87 Fiesta bowl was on ESPN classic yesterday. I took that as a good omen.

The last time USC faced Penn State in the Rose Bowl was in 1923—the first Rose Bowl game. Cardinal and Gold held sway that day, as the Trojans won, 14-3.

Fight on!

Well, it looks like another disastrous year for the Big Ten. Squashed twice by SEC teams, the Big Ten will try to redeem itself against the PAC 10. No such luck, though. The Big Ten will stay down until Notre Dame joins and the conference splits into two six division teams.

That sure seems odd. Between 1946, when Chicago dropped out, and 1949, when Michigan State joined, the league had only nine members--and was known as the Big Nine.

Q: What do Buckeyes and Marijuana have in common?

A: They both get smoked in bowls.

I have to give Penn State a lot of credit.

1. They have one of the loyalist alumni in the US.

2. They pack that erector set of a stadium with 100,000+ every home game.

3. They recruit well and have a ton of players that have gone on to the pros.

4. They have a ton of students that have been successful in life.

5. Their rate of graduation from all teams ranks in there with the highest in the country.

6. No team travels better to bowl games than Penn State fans.

I live in Penn State Country (Hershey/Harrisburg area) and I admire the loyalty of their fans.

Joe Paterno is still one of the best coaches in football.

All of these comments are from a Pitt graduate and fan.

Go Penn State!!! Proud of you.
