God's Little Gift

Posted on 12/15/2008 5:36:57 AM PST by Lloyd Marcus

My wife, Mary, and I recently visited her parents who live in the hills of West Virginia. After a lovely few days with her folks, we prepared to fly home to Florida. Mary's mom's computer was broken so we could not download our boarding passes. We were forced to drive10 miles to Mary's sister's office to use a computer.

To get there, Mary's mom instructed, “Take Grassy Lick Road”. As Mary drove the extremely hilly and winding road, we keep loosing the radio signal. So, we turned the radio off. We didn't see a single soul; only small farms, horses and black cows eating grass. “Oh honey look, there's a deer” yelled Mary. Then we saw two, and two more, five deer in total.

A slight chill was in the air. We smelled someone using their fireplace. When we finally reached the main highway, we realized that beyond the acknowledged deer sightings, we hadn't spoken our entire cruise down Grassy Lick road. We rode in silence enjoying the subtle sounds of nature. Mary and I almost simultaneously turned to each other and said, “Wow, was that awesome or what!” That little detour was so beautiful, relaxing and peaceful.

What appeared to be a negative, her mom's broken computer, turned out to be a lovely little gift from God. I'm learning to view more of life's detours in a more faith filled light.

Nice story. I live in Florida but in a nature preserve and see deer and other neat animals every day, sometimes in my backyard. You must live in South Florida? That’s more what most people’s images are of FL, but there are many rural and pretty areas of the state too, like driving up to Tallahassee. Very quaint and beautiful, especially in the autumn when the trees are changing.

I had a similar experience many years ago....a neighbor gal accompanied me on a trip to see my USMC buddy in Illinois; she wanted to go as far as her Dad's place in Sallisaw, Oklahoma.

The morning after depositing her, I needed to take some rural roads to get back to whatever big Intersate I needed to continue.....beautiful rolling hills and valleys, with a mix of misty early morning fog and sun.

I really wanted to just stop and pitch a tent.

Thanks for the reminder. We had a similar experience in West Virginia when we left the thruway to find a place to eat, and GOT LOST! I never knew W. Va. was so beautiful. Best part by far of an over 1,000 mile trip.

Thank You for reminding those of us who live in WV what a truly beautiful place it is. I resided in Florida a few years ago and got quite an education. I still love to visit my family who live there.

You almost certainly drove past my farm. Right now our retirement home is being built on the ridge above the road. I fell in love with the area and decided I had to stay. Two hours from the insanity of DC and it seems like a little piece of heaven. Glad other people are noticing.
