It might be a good idea to let that friend’s faucets leak a little bit. Water wasted down the drain will pull some heat through a buried pipe.
Still water will freeze.

We don’t have a key to the house. But the pipe is down deep enough, and the run short enough, that I think it’ll be okay. In a few days the temps will be back above freezing.

We piled leaves over our septic system and well-head. It supposedly helps. My in-laws have done this for decades and never had a freezing issue with their septic/well system.
Was able to take a shower this AM with no issues. So the early evidence is that is works.
