True (and kinda funny) story from a guy in Virginia:
Today on my way to lunch, I passed a homeless guy as I entered the restaurant. Homeless people are fairly rare in Reston but I had to laugh as the guy, despite his lot in life, clearly had a good sense of humor. You see, he had a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money."
Once in the restaurant my server had an "Obama '08" tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference - just imagine the coincidence. I have to say he did a fine job but when the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need - the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.
I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I've decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful. At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment, I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient deserved money more.
I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.
This one is being passed around via emails like crazy. Keep it going. BTTT
This has been roaming around emails and here at FR in various forms... I STILL LOVE IT!!
I find it offensive actually as people who wait on tables count on the tip for survival.
You could probably make the point better by giving part of the tip to the homeless guy and saying you were for “redistributive change” and had done so on that guy’s behalf.
Stiffing a waiter entirely is in poor form and bad taste. No matter his poor political attire.
I am going to do it next time I go to a restaurant, I hope I get a Obamaphile to serve me next time I go to Ruths Chris Steakhouse when I spend a lot.
I love it! The server probably doesn’t get it and will still vote for Obamanation.
thirty-six times on FR - in all it’s variants.
I find Barack Obama and all who support him offensive and revolting. They deserve everything bad that happens to them and more.
If he counts on tips for survival, he should probably avoid offending 50% of his customers...
Rush talked about this viral e-mail yesterday.
What did Rush say about it?
Agreed. Politics and work never mix.
One word in this email is wrong. In the second to last sentence he said “deserved”. He should have said “needed”.
No, it is not in poor form. It fits exactly the model of punishment used in the military - specifically boot camp. You don’t specifically punish the guy who screws up - the restaurant owner. You pay your bill but you let the waiter know that you are following what his boss wants. You put the onus on the owner. You just have to make sure you let the owner know also as well as all the other waiters. Some may see you as an alpha hotel but the seed will be planted in others. It will eventually make the boss change his behavior.
Did George Carlin write this?
George is dead, but it is his style.
People who rely on tips to make a margin of comfort in their chosen vocation, whether they believe it or not, must also have a certain frame of mind, that they shall deliver service worthy of the offering by the customer, and encourage that offering in every way. Some customers, of course, are notoriously difficult to please, others are utterly charmed by the attention given them, and reward that attention in terms of compensation.
Poor form and bad taste is a two-way street. The customer is not the only one who exhibits these traits in a transaction.
I love this!
But actually a freeper wrote it.
As someone who has worked for tips I don’t find it offensive. During work keep neutral and smile to your customers, giving them the best of service. His political views should have been checked at the door.
