Dire Straits - Skateaway 1980 RIP Jayzik Azikiwe(Rollergirl).
Watching the pre-MTV "Skateaway" video I was wondering who the young lady roller-skater was. Looking it up she is credited as Jay Carly, but real name Jayzik Azikiwe. She died early this year with little or no notice by the press. Certainly none I saw.
Looking at her obit she left London years ago to return to Africa. Daughter of an early president of Nigeria, she spent her life as a successful artist and musician in Africa.
Just thought there might be a few interested in what became of the lady with the lovely smile.
And how did she die?
The obit was in an African news service. No cause of death mentioned. It’s Africa, it could be most anything.
Skateaway was one of the first music videos I ever saw as a kid. This was before MTV - I think it was presented as a musical short on HBO (back when they showed shorts between feature films).
Great tune, great band.
RIP ROLLERGIRL
I say the same!
Great video and song. By the time I saw it on the MTV I was already a fan from the debut album but “Making Movies” does rank as my favorite Dire Straits album.
I will be sure to put it in the CD player tomorrow.
Funny to see her wearing what looks like an early prototype of an iPod.
Cancer. She was originally Nigerian but lived in Gambia, where she was something of a celebrity.
Thanks for this! While the news is sad, it brought back a bit of my youth and I appreciate that.
A Sony Walkman.
Wow that was a blast from the past - sad to hear about Rollergirl
“Wow make this breaking news. no offense but there are lots of people that die a year ago that no one gives a crap about.”
Duly noted.
RIP Rollergirl.
Funny you should mention this as I was just watching this video on YouTube a few weeks back as it was/is one of my favorite videos/songs. I had noticed the mentions that she had died. Did she have a great bod or what? I had to look her up on Wikipedia after that as I had never known about her story.
no fears alone at night she's sailing through the crowd
in her ears the phones are tight and the music's playing loud....
Great song!
BUMP!!
Good post.
That was a great song and an excellent video.
I’ll bump your bump. One of the best.
Oops, I’d like to amend that post. Guess I didn’t find her bio on Wikipedia but I know I Googled it and read something about her.
Brings back fond memories from a time in my life when Reagan was President and the most fantastic things were happening to most everyone. (Except Liberals, they were their usual miserable self.)
