My mother who is a saint had me, my twin brother and my younger brother all on the leash, and we turned out just fine. We don’t beg at the table and never pee on the rug. :-)

We used one for taking the wee ones skiing.

The leashes can be dangerous. When my father was in the subway in DC, some cow eyed idiot housefrau came in with her spawn on one of those. She forgot about him and the door closed on the leash with her boy outside and her on the inside. She didn't notice until my doddering father was trying to jam his rickety arms in the subway door trying to pry the door open. To his credit, a young, alert(and much stronger) african american male helped my father pry the door open and throw the leash outside just as the Subway was pulling away.

The moral of the story? Don't get one, pay attention to your little boogers yourself.

Neither of my boys were the running away type so I never used one. I think some little kids might be more inclined to run and some situations require absolute control.

I guess I'd rather use it if needed than not use it if it means a kid squirms away into traffic or something.

I had them and used them occasionally for the kids. A couple of ours were bolters. Our youngest is a hand-holder.

I would rather see little kids playing freely, but if not, would rather see them on a leash where they can run and jump instead of buckled into an SUV-sized stroller.

You see so many kids rolling around in those strolleres, fussing all the way as if they’d give anything to get out and play.

We used one with my son when he was 2. He liked to walk and could keep up, but had moves an NFL running back would envy. The strap connected my wrist to his, and he normally held my hand when we walked, but if I let go for a second, like when I had his baby sister with me, the leash ensured he didn’t take off, or worse, someone grabbed him and ran.

“I think they can be useful if you have a really independent toddler and you are going to a very crowded place, like Disneyland.”

.....yep, my mother put one on me when we went down town...we did the same when my kids were that age...it’s real easy to lose a small child on a crowded sidewalk.

Some babies become very mobile at a very young age, long before you can teach them anything. Leaches are fine if you want to keep from losing that kind of a child in a crowd.

Ours are all on their own now.Just ask the wife what she thought. She doesn’t like the halter type (dog style) she goes with the wrist type?Something we would have discussed I’m sure.Reckon I’m a softy,go with what you need.

But I still think ,,,,

My dogs are behaved well enough not to use a leech and I would never have dreamed of having my kids on a leach.

My mom had one for me in the 40's, think she even put it on the clothesline once. Now somebody would probably call CPS on her because I think you could get caught in it somehow and strangled if it gets tangled. I do remember getting lost in a store once, but don't remember the leash, just that she told me about it later.

I don't have a problem with a parent who feels the need to use one, but know you can't protect your kids from everything.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

My feelings exactly. The only other alternative would be straightjacketing them in a “SUV-sized” stroller.

My mother used them on me in the 50s and I used them on my son in the late 70s. I think they’re a good idea and much better than letting a toddler who won’t stay in the stroller run around and get snatched or hit by a car. Over the years, I’ve saved a few toddlers from running into the street when they’ve gotten away from their parents.
