I was reading a messageboard thread over at Babyfit.com, and was curious as to what my fellow Freepers thought of the practice of using toddler leashes?
Do you swear by them? Abhor them? Want to burn them on sight?
My mom kept me on one back in the early 60’s...never did get lost!
My parents used a shock collar, sorry.
Leases are for animals, not children.
Better to instruct your children how to behave and then watch over them carefully.
A lease only keeps them near you. It does not teach them how to act.
I recommend the “invisible fence” approach . . . much more instructive and the results are fabulous . . . one innocent looking collar . . . junior toddles too far from mom . . . 50,000 volts remind junior that he’s strayed too far . . .
My parents tied a bone to the leash so the dogs would play with me...
They were very large dogs.
Sometimes I wish I would have just “leased” my child.
Just funnin’ ya...
I had to travel alone, then I did use one at the airport...ONCE.
Good lord no....that is what upper west side Obamabot yuppie GenX goofballs do
the sorta couple where the wife wears the big pants
not this peckerwood hoss
(father of 5 from 22 months to 20 years)
My folks just used a fishin’ pole. They’d just reel me in every so often....
Abhor them? Want to burn them on sight?
And tell anyone that has their youngin’ on one.
“My,what a nice doggie you got there.”
We raised 5 kids, keep an eye on them as they are more important than what’s on sale.Period
If you have a wiggly child who refuses to hold your hand, they are great!!!!
I had handholders. Almost every boy child I know started toddling on a harness.
But then again, we know the difference between our pets and our kids. I would never put a kid on a lead and push a dog in a stroller!!!!
Each kid’s different. My mom had 5 kids. She only used a harness on one. He needed it and turned out just fine.

No. I thought if you needed to keep your child on a leash then you should not have a child.
Well...there is the one time my daughter slipped away in a store and managed to pull off her sundress and diaper in the front window.....
Sheesh.
With both my kids, we walked holding hands. After a while, they'd want to move around, but if I called out "Hold Hands", they would immediately come back and take my hand. Most of the time.
My mother who is a saint had me, my twin brother and my younger brother all on the leash, and we turned out just fine. We don’t beg at the table and never pee on the rug. :-)
I think they can be useful if you have a really independent toddler and you are going to a very crowded place, like Disneyland.
I think they are good if you have more children than hands. But also when you know you are going to a very crowded area and they can slip away quickly.
Oh yeah, and they have the kind now that come in a little animal backpack and you can tuck the “leash” in the backpack when not necessary to be used.
I swear by them!
My second child was so impulsive as a toddler it would have been impossible to go outside with him. He would have seen a truck or dog and darted out into the street like a flash of lightning.
So?....Which is worse? Keeping a child confined inside until he is 4 or using a restraint so that he can enjoy a walk on the sidewalk or in a mall?
