ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- When brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick were looking for inspiration for their third feature-length film, they turned to God for help. Kirk Cameron, known best for his role on "Growing Pains," stars in in the movie as Caleb Holt.

"To be honest, I prayed about it," Alex Kendrick said. "I said, 'God, would you give me an idea that will impact all of our culture.' "

The movie, which has a strong faith-based message and was made with a budget of just $500,000 and a volunteer cast that includes former teen idol Kirk Cameron, has been surprisingly successful. Its opening on 839 screens two weeks ago was strong enough to propel it to No. 4 at the box office.

It stayed in the top 10 last weekend, at No. 8, and has earned an estimated $13.6 million and spawned a best-selling book that started as a prop.

"The Love Dare," written by the Kendricks, was at No. 8 on Amazon's best-seller list Thursday afternoon. In the movie, Caleb Holt (Cameron) receives the book from his father....

This is an excellent movie, and one we should support. Get out and see it this weekend, and keep it in theaters. Send Hollyweird a message that we'd appreciate some movies with positive messages and actual values...

I hope it’s better than American Carol. I liked the conservative theme but the writing was horrible.

That’s $16,000 per theater. That’s a hit. If they had put it in 3,000 theaters it would be up to almost $50 million.

Agreed. We were almost ready to walk out, until “John F. Kennedy” showed up.

It was done in “Airplane”-like fashion, so it was going to be goofy, but the beginning was downright S-L-O-W.

Folks just want to be able to see a decent family movie...what is it about that Hollywood can’t quite figure out? They’d rather cut their noses off to spite their botox faces.

good for them. I’d like to see a movie industry niche for family themed movies which aren’t animated.

I’m not Christian and I’m not planning on seeing this (since I wasn’t leaving my wife or ignoring her in the first place - she’s Jewish so that wouldn’t have lasted long anyways).

How would this be for kids ages 7 and 9? We’re having a hard time getting a babysitter.

The young teens from my church went to see this the other night. They had to drive quite a way to it, but they did.

7 & 9?.........Well, there's no cursing, no sex, no lewdness......no horror...

...the theme is unconditional love....

..and God is exhalted...

There are two instances of children in peril...but it's handled well..

.....maybe early teens would be better for viewing....7 or 9 might get anxious...not sure.

I saw it and I think they’d be very bored.

Also, some of the reason this is so successful is some people are not aware of what type of movie they’re going to see. I was in the theatre and heard many people saying “I didn’t know this was a religious movie!” “I can’t believe I paid $10 to see a religious movie.” Things like that. I saw several looking for a manager when the movie was over and they were commenting to each other that they felt “ripped off”.

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be successful in it’s own right, but the firefighter thing and floundering marriage led these ladies behind me to believe they were seeing something like a movie where he almost died and then they put their lives back together, etc. etc.

Saw it last night. Facing the Giants [by the same people] is also a good movie.

It’s about marriage, and there is some fighting in it. Other themes in it will go right over their heads, but all in all I’d say it’s more appropriate for Mom and Dad.

Well, not one of the reviews or articles have failed to mention the religious theme, so they just didn’t do their homework, I guess. Even if the Christian message were not part of it, though, the fundamentals in this movie are so good, and I guarantee the idea of serving your spouse without selfishness is a new one to many people. It will, hopefully, be a turning point for many marriages.

I agree that the reviews have heavily mentioned it, but I guess some people don’t read reviews. Maybe they just look at the synopsis and go, who knows.

I do think young children would be bored though. I’d definitely recommend a babysitter.
