The Hobbit Hole XXXVII - ...Down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed!

Posted on 09/25/2008 6:43:34 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

He *sounds* pretty convinced it will be very straightforward as braces go—that my only issue is overcrowding. And he only refers the tricky cases, like jaw misalignment type issues.

There are orthodontists in town, too, but most are pretty pricey, and really seem to cater to pediatric orthodontics. I know myself...I can research something until I feel like I have no possible options, and so I’m really tempted to cancel this appointment and do that. I may be better off taking what few references I’ve heard about him and avoiding second guessing myself from here to kingdom come.

It’s probably OK. But it’s a two year commitment. And he’d have to pull some teeth, which scares me. No going back from that.

Rhetorical question: why am I still at work?

Good heavens man! I have to ask the same question!

Get home to that new house.

No, there’s no going back. But two years really isn’t that long.

And, in two years, will you regret not having done it?

He’s qualified, or he wouldn’t be licensed to do it, right?

Everything with braces happens in such slow motion, and you adjust as you go. It just doesn’t seem to me to be a big *risk* operation. I mean... it’s not like spinal surgery where one slip can end your dancing career. :~D

Better the devil you know, IMHO. If you shop around, what would you ask them? How would you know who the right guy is?

I think you should do it! :~)

I don't think there's a special license. Just that in order to bill yourself as an orthodontist rather than a dentist who does orthodontics, you have an additional amount of studying and an additional degree to get after you get your dental degree--like a master's rather than just a bachelor's. Something like that. But from what I found, many dentists take additional classes on orthodontics (just not the full program) and then do their own ortho for adult patients and/or less complicated cases, and refer just the more tricky ones. Sounds like that's true for him.

Better the devil you know, IMHO. If you shop around, what would you ask them? How would you know who the right guy is?

Yeah...I'm thinking I'd end up with more doubts than answers.

I'm still skeert about tooth extractions. It'd be three or four (forget exactly) in one blow. Probably the first or second week of June. I haven't asked about time off yet, but I'd guess I'd want some....

Well, I'm at home now, eating a late dinner. Hopefully won't have to do that again for a while...

And I really want someone to just tell me, “Yes, this is what you should do, and he’s an OK person to do it.”

Consider yourself told! My cousin, Merni, who is a year younger than I, got braces when she was in her mid 30's. She considers it one of the best things she's ever done for herself. She didn't do it just for the cosmetic aspect of it, but also for greatly reducing the problems she would have had with her teeth and gums as she got older.

Oh, it’s not so much the extraction itself I’m scared of. I know he can do that almost without my knowing it—he already pulled a major molar at the end of December, and it really wasn’t too bad at all. I was sore afterward, of course, but no major problems.

But the irrevocability of it scares me. No going back once he’s pulled teeth. Can’t deextract ‘em. Once that’s done, I’m in this for the long haul.

OK, so maybe I’m making a big deal out of nothing. I dunno.

Yes, we went and saw it when it was in the theater, back in January. We both enjoyed it!

We have tickets to see the new Terminator movie Friday night.

To second what SuziQ said; OB never had braces, but he should’ve. Now that he’s ~ahem~ older, he has to see the dentist every 4 months instead of every six.

I had braces when I was young, and I hated ‘em, but they were among the best things my parents ever forced me to do. In the great scheme of things, two years isn’t that long (except when you’re 8), and it’s not like you have 4 empty spaces in your mouth for 2 years, the braces will start pulling your teeth into alignment very quickly, I promise!
