The Hobbit Hole XXXVII - ...Down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed!

Posted on 09/25/2008 6:43:34 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

...and pie. Used the last of the butternut squash to make a squash pie.

Pie and coffee with Irish cream. Mmmmm....

Can we cancel Monday? I don’t think it’s gonna work for me.

Yah... concur with that.

Well, I went out and saw Star Trek today. Matinee show, to miss the crowd. I know there are some detractors out there, but I liked it a lot. Visually stunning... and though I've never been a fan of the "time travel" device... pretty much ever... they get away with it this time, I think.

Yah, it had it's campy moments... but what was The Original Series if not campy? I think they did great justice to The Original Series, to match or make up for whatever violence was done to TOS. I may see it again at the Theater before it goes. My .02. :-)

I thought about going to that today, but never quite worked up the gumption to actually go much of anywhere. Ended up reading “The Last Unicorn” instead. Fun read.

Maybe next Sunday. At the very least, it sounds entertaining. And I’m curious to see Karl Urban take on McCoy.

No Star Trek for me yet, although it's on my must-see-first-in-the-theater list. Instead, I decided to tackle the three remaining aftermarket Mini-14 mags. The final exam will be firing a full magazine from each. Today I just wanted to load them with dummies and cycle them.

Biiig mistake, two of them were total duds. They wouldn't latch into place because the bottom edge of the rear lug was down too low for the magazine latch.

No problem, a little quick work with a rotary file on the Foredom, and they'd be ready to go. Unfortunately, the mags are so cheaply made the lug snapped off while I was grinding the bottom edge.

Just two spotwelds and a little bit of rust were holding them on. After further study, I've come to the conclusion that the plastic mags are a work of art in comparison. Now that I've opened up the magazine well by a few thousandths, they fit and feed properly, even the last round.

So I stripped the two failed magazines for parts, and terminated them with extreme prejudice.

Now they're suitably demilled, and ready to take their rightful place in the trash.

I'm ordering some more plastic ones, and keeping the couple of steel mags that pass my stringent testing. With genuine Ruger factory 20-rounders selling for $60 (!!?!!), I think I can live with carefully-tested plastic 30 rounds. I don't think Ruger made any factory magazines in 30 rounds, because Bill Ruger was concerned about the image his rifle would present. Now they're offering one of the most expensive gas-piston M16 clones out there, the SR556, and it looks as evil as all the other EBRs that Bill Ruger tried to distance his company from.

NAMES !!!!

The Tapco was the good aftermarket mag ?!?!?!?!?

Amazing......will you do a grit test on the mags ? I have seen some as stated before that fuzz up with wear over time making them hard to insert and drop. Granted ain’t crawling through the desert anymore but mud and splashed water etc when the mini or ebr is on the rack of my ATV around the property is a concern.

Good report 300 !!

NAMES !!!!

These are the Ruger magazines, not the M16 clones. The unmarked steel ones are by C.J. Weapons Accessories, but they're not even listed at their site any more. I did buy a delrin 5.56 and 7.62mm cleaning rod guide from them. They're kind of interesting, in that they have a set of lugs on the front end so they lock into the barrel extension when used for cleaning. Some of their other cleaning accessories look interesting, too. Their (ex-)Ruger mags suck, though.

Plastic mags can either be solid polymer (if you want to pay for the good stuff), or reinforced with some sort of solid material, like a fiber. See-through mags, like the Steyr or Lancer have to depend on just the strength of the plastic. Any wear would be like wear on metal, homogeneous the whole way through.

I took a file to the Tapco, and filed down a small sprue mark on the back edge. Nothing "fuzzed up", which means it's solid plastic with no fiber fillers. The unnamed Ruger plastic mags do have a filler in them, because a little bit of filing will raise the fuzz, since they use a softer grade of plastic, and depend on the fibers for added strength.

It's a lot like a fiberglass boat hull, or Corvette body. In those cases, there's a separate hard gel coat on the outer surface to give the surface hardness and shine. Below that, it's fibers (glass in that case) that provide stiffness, with the plastic being the bonding agent that holds it all together. I'll check my other plastic mags in my "reference library" when I come across them.

Any sort of "fuzz" that appears can be easily removed with a light touch of a worn fine file, or even a fingernail. If anything, the dimensions should decrease as the fuzz is removed.

A good test would be to try one out in a sandblast booth, but that's one machine tool I don't own. Maybe tumbling in a case tumbler?

Impressive, thanks for taking the time. I think I may shoot down to local gunslinger and get some tapco’s for the mini.

Went a read up on the SR556. Think I am going to get the Hk civilian variant later this year in both 5.56 and 7.62 flavors if they are still being sold.

I like the Mini for a working gun when wheeling or just fishing locally, toss it in the boat hide and it’s there if monster cats attack......:o)

.... My favorite ruger is a Ruger No 1 stainless in 45-70. That is the last firearm I will sell .

By the way the brass tumbler would be more authentic for wear and tear test. Even a cement mixer with some gravel & sand in it, dry.

Impressive, thanks for taking the time.

Tweren't no big deal. I was enjoying myself, even while muttering curses.

I can work on guns or computers for hours at a time, and get a lot of peace and enjoyment from it. I like work that demands patience, skill, and attention to the smallest detail. Sniping requires that, too, but I haven't had much opportunity to dabble in it. :)

People ask me why I don't go into business, and I say it's because nobody will pay the $100 per hour for perfection when "good enough" is $80. So I reserve that kind of work for family, friends, and myself. I loved lavishing all kinds of hidden attention on the Hobbit Hole knives, but detested the packaging, customs paperwork, and mailing that went with it.

Your work on the knife project was awesome. For that I am grateful. I agree with you on details and working on my own stuff as well. Haven’t met the hammer monkey yet that is as picky and serious on others projects as he is on his own. There are a few , mind you and I think your maybe one of those few per your work here.

I prefer to work over time , go slow and enjoy. Had one local smith that had a 1911A1 frame for almost 4 years and when I said sorry , no more time , I want it back now he handed me back the bone stock frame , untouched, lied , said he was almost done every time I inquired etc ........

Low trust locally so I tend to learn as I go , saving for the tools I need and going to schools I need over time.

Rule one is always something new to learn. Watch , listen and don’t be afraid to ask.......LOL !

Stay safe !

You know, of course, that someone will swoop in and score the 7777 very soon now. Unfortunately, it won’t be me.

So, I'm sitting here in mynewhouse, at my computer, unpacking stuff --- in particular, my pens. It's late --- or maybe early, depending on how you look at time. I'm up waiting for a guilty pleasure TV show to come on at 2am, and watching Renovation Realities on the DIY network. I am about to start working on tomorrow's to-do list, which promises to be hugh.

Thenewwashingmachine and thenewdryer are both running, as is the dishwasher, all amazingly quietly. The newrefrigerator is making ice. (I can get all the ice I want, and never mess with a tray! YAYYY!)

It's the beginning of a day that the Lord has made, folks. Have a good one!

Yep, see that’s where I am. I think it’s a very watchable movie. I know it’s “off canon” and “destroys the history” and all of that. But it’s a fine movie.
