What was YOUR first car? Your favorite car? (VANITY)

Was talking to a friend about old cars & old times today (for me, that means the early 80s, when I got my license). I've had a LOT of cars. Most clunkers, as I was usually broke, but a few gems. I've had better cars, and I've had worse. But here's my 1st & fav picks.

My very first car, purchased in 1980 for the Princely sum of $150, was a true tank: the 1969 Chrysler Town & Country station wagon. Weighing in at an impressive 3,700 lbs (IIRC), it had a wheezing 383 CI, after-market manual choke sticking out of the dash, and some very nice wood-like vinyl stuck to the sides.

Mine was blue. It was Rad. I loved it. It lasted 3 weeks.




My favorite car (out of the 50+ I've owned over the years) might surprise some of you. It was a tough choice, but I settled on an odd little 4-door I owned from 1985 to 1986. I think it is my favorite because it was such an unusual car to see in Michigan (never seen another since), and because it was such a tough little bugger. It was even stabbed by a drug-crazed hippy once. How many people can say that about their car? True story. The Fiat Mirafiori 131S (mine was this exact color)..

I was SHOCKED to learn that my parents never owned a car until they were married. That blows me away. Their first car was a 1952 Mercury Monterey.



My mom's favorite ever was her 1955 Ford Fairlane Victoria (crown vic, I guess). Hers was Red/White:



Dad's fav was a 1964 Corvair, which had been built for drag racing, then de-tuned for the street. The original HP was 140 for that engine, after tweaking for the strip he estimates it was over 300 HP. After de-tuning it was about 240. Still a LOT of power for a car of that size.

He owned a number of Corvairs over the years, and this is the only one he doesn't have a picture of... he sold it not long after buying it because of the 70s gas crunch, when premium gas (the engine required it) hit a jaw-dropping .60 cents a gallon.

First car was a 1972 Pontiac Catalina. It was a boat with 400ci and 200hp (thank you EPA). But it was great for what it was built for :)

Favorite car....hmmm.....I'd have to say it's my present ride. Point, shoot, go. Scrape your neck off the headrest. For the money it absolutely cannot be beat. Kinda funny that out of about 25 or 30 cars total my first and my favorite are the only Pontiacs I've ever bought. Never thought about it. :)

My first car was a 1980 Mustang

except it didn't look as nice as this one.

My favorite car was a 1998 VW Jetta, like this one

except the steering wheel was on the left hand side, and it even came from the dealer with nice wheels and a spoiler.

It got me a lot of attention from the ladies, including my now-wife. I cried when I had to trade it in.

First car was a 65 Impala SS. 327 powerglide. 300 HP @ 5000 rpm. For being a large car, it got up and went pretty good.

Favorite car is my current one. 2007 Subaru Forester XT Sport. The turbo under the hood allows it to get up and scoot very well.

My first car was a 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang, straight 6 cyl, 3 speed, 1st did not have synchro. I got that thing in 1972. Wasted white, small dents all over. I thought it was great.

I kept it until I muffed a clutch job (got oil on the disc) 6 years later, and traded it in on a 1972 Mercury Capri without telling the dealer about the problem with the clutch. Felt no guilt, because he didn’t tell me about the problems with the Capri!

My favorite car is the one I drive now, a 1993 Ford Probe GT. It has all the cornering ability I’ll ever use, has enough power and is comfortable enough. The car fits me like a glove. I’ll drive it until it costs more to repair than to buy another.

First car: 1971 Olds Vista Cruiser station wagon with the 455, bought from dad for $100 in 1981. (Think that 70’s show with the wood paneling and everything). Still probably my favorite, so many of my best memories happened in that car.

First car: a well-used 1963 Ford Galaxie 4 door with a 289 V-8 and a two-speed "Fordamatic" automatic transmission. Big bench seats, busted shocks. My wife and I honeymooned in that thing in the summer of love.

Favorite? Our first new car -- green, 1968 Karmann-Ghia convertible. Slow and sexy.

First car: a 1965 Chevrolet Impala that I drove for a quarter million miles.

Favorite car: a 1973 Ford LTD Brougham Coupe that was wrecked after a drunken illegal alien plowed into it while it was parked.

My first car was a 1978 Chyrsler LeBaron. The brakes grabbed on the right so I had to turn the steering wheel left to keep the car straight whenever I braked. I thought it was great because I didn’t have to ride the school bus anymore, and it also allowed me to get my first job and earn my own money.

My favorite car is my current one, a 1997 Honda Civic. It was paid for long ago, gets 30-35 miles per gallon, and still runs great with 169,000 miles on it.

I wrecked a 1979 Celica in Fairfax, VA back in ‘88. BAD accident.
It was a great car except for the bald tires (wet road = hydroplane)... wasn’t my car, but I was driving at the time and had no idea about the tires.

My first was a ‘73 Buick Apollo that looked a lot like the Nova in that picture. I bought it from my oldest sister for $500 in 1980.

My mom’s favorite car is a baby blue ‘78 Impala that she has driven for 30 years now. She is giving it away tomorrow and I think she is in shock. I hope she doesn’t start crying.

I kept mine for 10 years. I had occasional trouble with the pollution control crap, but that was a common problem with most cars of that era. The transmission eventually went out and the replaced one I put in for a couple hundred dollars wasn’t so good, so I traded it in. Not a great car by any means, but I never regretted buying it.
