$1,000 Bills Surprise Bank
WBBM.COM ^ | 07/10/08

MUNSTER, Ind. (WBBM) - It's not often that a bank returns a deposit to a customer because the deposit is worth more than the customer realized.

But that's what happened this week at the American Savings Bank in Munster, Indiana.

An unidentified woman brought in two, $1,000 bills to make a deposit.

A teller alerted bank officials because she had never seen a $1,000 bill before.

After doing some research, officials discovered the rare bills issued in 1934 were probably worth as much as $4,500 each.

They contacted the depositor and gave the bills back.

The woman says she got the bills from a relative many years ago, and wasn't sure what exactly prompted her to try to deposit them this week.

They likely had much more value when she originally received them.

It was nice of the bank to contact her to let her know what they where really worth instead of some teller ‘making change’ for herself and pocketing them.

In 1957 when I took the race car to Santa Barbara for the SCCA race the car owener gave me a $1,000 bill for expenses for the long weekend.

They were redially available then, the owner met me at his bank in North Hollywood where he made the withdrawal aqnd got it.

I have known several people who carried one folded up in their wallet for emergancies.

There is a penalty for stuffing your mattress with $1000 bills, yes.

You must run in some pretty well-heeled circles. Either that or you know some of Pretty Boy Floyd's crew.

Never could stand flakes, bums, or lazy people!

Everyone I know is either wealthy or at least totally paying their own way in life.

Who does? I'm talking about how unusual it is to know anyone who has a $1000 bill in their wallet. You are a unique fellow in that regard.

I don't think having a large amount of cash on hand is difficult to explain; I live in an affluent part of the country. I only thought it was surprising that someone knew folks with $1000 bills in their wallet. I just guessed that was a leftover from the Pretty Boy Floyd era. Pretty Boy was rumored to hand out $1000 bills.

With the value of the dollar falling the Federal Reserve may have to start printing $1000 and greater notes.

Kids, 16-17, walking around downtown at night with $1000 or more, other kids waiting to roll them. Busy time for the Fbx cops.

I always keep a few hundred dollar bills for emergencies. The problem is that a Frosty at midnight has become the definition of an emergency too often now...

Bret Maverick used to keep a $1000.00 bill pinned in his coat for emergencies.
