We didn't complain because we were extremely happy. We thought we were the most blessed of people to have a roof over our head and a garden for food. Most of the time the cistern had water and when it didn't, it was fun to ride the wagon to the spring and back. We kids almost prayed for drought so we would have to haul water. We didn't think about it being hard times. There were animals for food and for pets, fruit trees, blackberries in the woods, strawberries, peanuts, watermelons and hand cranked homemade ice cream.

This was during the 40s after the War started. During the Depression years we had much less and times were lean, but we didn't know it at the time. I thought everyone lived on biscuits and "poorman's gravy", and allowed the goats and chickens roam through the house in the summertime (due to lack of screens). LOL

You two have captured the spirit of kids at play at the old swimming hole with your picture and poem. (I could use a good swim right now.)

I'm with you--I'm heading out to buy popsicles.

Meanwhile, that was a great collection of kids on the lawn.

If you can find better than biscuits and gravy, please tell me, except beans and cornbread. I live alone now but now and then I will make gravy and use frozen biscuits and sometimes canned biscuits, just for me. As a matter of fact I like them! And I like beans and cornbread.

A friend and I were talking about how we used to go bare footed and play outside till dark and Mama made us come in. Now kids have a cell phone to their ear 24/7 and stay in front of a computer or t.v. and play electronic games. We played Red Light, May I, Hopscotch, Red Rover and rode our bicycles. It was a wonderful life, I think!

Yeah, he is so cute! There is a resemblence there for sure. Has he been in anything else besides the Spiderman movies? I’d like to see him acting. Thanks, Dita!

Before he was in the Spiderman movies, he did a wonderful turn in “The Cider House Rules.” I thought he was wonderful in that movie, and regretted he didn’t continue with that type of acting.

Oh yes. Remember catching lightening bugs? We would collect them in a jar and put them in the bedroom at night for a “nightlight”. Tennessee back then was an idealic place to grow up. What a pity that children can’t play like that these days. What a wicked world it has become. Maranatha!

I could probably rent that movie. May be able to catch it on one of those cable movie channels. My cable bill went up so high this last month I may be cancelling some things. Going to the office and check on my bill this week. My internet went up and my t.v. cable too.

With gas and food so high today, it looks like we’re going to get poked with higher cable and higher electricity, I heard. I’m sick of it.

Swing
Robert Louis Stevenson

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
Rivers and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside -

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown -
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

I caught many a lightning bug. (Now I think its cruel)...If I find one in the house, I save the little thing.

Yes, the world has changed...I have wondered what my grandparents would think if they could come back.
