There is debate as to whether or not a magnetic field is needed - Venus has an atmosphere 95 times the density of earth, and no magnetic field at all.

I think I heard somewhere that Sulfate aerosols in Venus’s atmosphere is the reason why Venus’s atmosphere still exists.
