What a fun day, Amy!
One of the last field trips I volunteered for, was to a pumpkin patch with 28 first graders.
We all boarded an old yellow school bus - in the heat of one of the last summer days.
The windows were sealed shut in that old bus, but we didn’t find out into well into our trip.
The heat was stiffling. We could hardly wait to get there!
One of the children in the back of the bus became ill and lost his breakfast all over the seats in front of him.
With the excessive heat, excitement (and wafting odor), other children began to lose their breakfast, too.
Before we got to the pumpkin patch, over half of the children had lost their breakfast in that old bus.
It was a field trip from you-know-where, and I was never so glad to be home in my life, that evening.
Glad you had a great time! ;-)

**CORINNAS GOING A-MAYING.**
Cool! Thanks Conor! I wrote my last month’s article on May Day. Most people don’t realize May day was originally a pagan celebration, basically a reason/excuse to cut loose and celebrate “fertility” without being penalized.
Green gown was a euphemism for the grass stains the girls would get from trysting in the woods and fields. I didn’t get all those references, but I got most of them, and some you can figure out.
Neat poem!

Dont Go Down There
This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. 2 John 1:6
In his book Lessons Learned Early, Jerry Jenkins tells a story about his freshman year in college. It was 1968, a year of tremendous political and social upheaval in the US.
Riots had broken out in many major cities. From the rooftop of his dorm in Chicago, Jerry heard sirens and saw fires burning. Students had been told to stay on campus, but Jerry wanted to see what was happening.
As he ran toward a store that was blazing a few blocks away, a police car pulled up beside him. Dont go down there, the officer warned.
Jerry waited till the car pulled away and then kept walking. The officer returned. This time he made it more clear as he repeated, Dont go down thereand leveled a shotgun out the window.
Our rebellious or willful streaks often lead to unhappy outcomes. In anger, Moses struck the rock to get water rather than just speak to it as God had commanded. He forfeited the privilege of entering the Promised Land with his people (Num. 20:7-12). Jonah disobeyed an order to go to Nineveh and was given 3 days to think about his choiceinside a big fish (Jonah 1).
What does it take for us to obey Him? Will we obey simply because we love Him? (John 14:15,21).
Nothing between, like worldly pleasure:
Habits of life, though harmless they seem,
Must not my heart from Him ever sever
He is my all! Theres nothing between. Tindley

( In GodÂ’s works we see His hand; in His Word we hear His heart)
To: JustAmy
For Socrates' Day, the most famous painting of the sage: "Death of Socrates" (1787), by Jacques-Louis David
On Virtue: Socrates in mainly interested in the question of how should one live?. If you know what a virtue is then you automatically know how to act in each situation. Socrates believes that nobody does wrong willingly but only due to ignorance and therefore the whole virtue is knowledge because it is impossible to have only a single virtue without having all of them. Knowledge of a virtue automatically leads acting in accordance with it because there is no reason why one should choose a worse option if a better is known. -- derived from Socrates from THEOSOPHY, Vol. 27, No. 9, July, 1939 Pages 387-394
* * *
On Humor: True humor has been employed by sages from the beginning of recorded history. We see Socrates' subtle humor in Plato's Ion in which the pomposity and self-deception of the self-appointed Homer-expert is made embarassingly apparent. As with all Perennialist sages, Socrates fought against the degrading tendencies and institutions of his day with the higher powers of humor. Plato attacked the excesses of the sophists who trained young men in nothing other than propaganda and pompous oratory, by revealing their vain pedantry and pomposity in his dialogues. -- Hermes-press

Celebrating Aesop's Fables the Mayor Bloomberg way ...
The Hawk and the Mouse
A clever mouse is sunning himself in Battery Park, when a hawk swoops down and seizes him in her talons. Whistling through the air, the mouse warns the hawk not to eat him. Why shouldnt I? says the hawk. Dont you know, says the mouse, that mice are loaded with trans fats? Alarmed, the hawk releases the mouse and flies away. Several days later, the hawk happens upon an old owl devouring a less fortunate mouse. Stop! cries the hawk. Dont you know those things are loaded with trans fats? The owl stops eating and says, What are you, an idiot?

Graphic by MamaBear
COWBOY
Up before the morning sun
Out to tend the herd
As if the work is never done
Yet done without a word
There is a certain peace at dawn
All cattle in accord
The trail, it seems, goes on and on
Before the dusty hoard
There is a bond 'tween man and beast
While some may think this strange
You love your cities in the East
The cowboy loves the range.

LONE RANGER'S CREED
I believe that to have a friend, a man must be one; that all men are created equal and that everyone has within himself the power to make this a better world; That God put the firewood there, but that every man must gather and light it himself; In being prepared physically, mentally, and morally to fight when necessary for that which is right; That a man should make the most of what equipment he has; That sooner or later...somewhere...somehow...we must settle with the world and make payment for what we have taken; That all things change, but the truth, and the truth alone lives on forever; I believe in my Creator, my country, my fellow man. |
