I know it was a hundred years ago, but when we went to VBS it was for an hour or two during the day.

Oh thanks for the memories! I do remember VBS in the late 40s! LOL...yes, no more than two hours.

I still use a cutting board our oldest son, now 46, made in VBS! I cherish it. Waving Good Morning from Los Angeles.

The Statue of Liberty arrived at its permanent home at Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor on June 19, 1885, aboard the French frigate Isere. A gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States, the 151-foot-tall statue was created to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. Designed by sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and officially titled Liberty Enlightening the World, the Statue of Liberty has symbolized freedom and democracy to the nation and to the world for over 120 years.

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she

With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

— Emma Lazarus

On June 19, 1865 Union General Gordon Granger read out the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas to notify those slaves that they were free.

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862 to declare slaves their freedom in areas under the Confederate control, including Florida. Freedom from slavery took effect January 1, 1863. This date is known as "Jubilee Day".

Happy Juneteenth, Everyone.

We had an item in the paper yesterday discussing bottled water and the trend going back to tap water.

Since our temp is going to hit near 100 again today, reminds me of quenching one's thirst from the hose. Even better is sharing that drink with a friend...

Waving back, Polly.

We lived in a rural area. We attended VBS at 2 or 3 different churches every summer. Our friends would go with us and then in a couple of weeks we would go with our friends.

It was a fun way to spend part of our summer vacation. I don’t remember every having summer school.
