Last weekend, we had a “missions emphasis” at church where they talked about, well...missions. They didn't mention disaster relief, but they did talk a great deal about a mission trip to New Orleans that a group had gone on during the summer. It was not a DR trip, per say...meaning it wasn't organized by the state DR, but by ordinary folks in the church. That's good...mission trips are good!
Still, I wished they'd mentioned more about DR and got to talking to the pastor and he said he only knew of me and one other guy in the church that were DR trained. Come to find out, that guy's training had expired and mine had too, except I was already signed up to get my training update the next Saturday (yesterday). I asked the pastor if I could put up a small display table with info on it about DR and sign up some folks to go to the next DR training in October in OKC. He said that would be great, and if I got more than just a couple of people, we could take the church van.
So I did just that...this morning I set up a small display table and put my yellow cap on it even...with a sign-up sheet. As I was standing beside the table this older guy comes up and says “What are you doing?” I told him what I was doing, thinking he was interested in possibly doing DR. He said “Well, I'VE been planning on setting this up for MY mission team.” He seemed a bit irritated by me.
I seriously just stood there blinking...trying to figure out what he was talking about.
Then he says “You need to organize this so that the training is done here, not in OKC...MY mission team won't want to go all the way to OKC for the training.”
I said “Well, I got permission from the pastor to sign people up for this training session in OKC, so that's what I'm doing today.”
He walked off, still seeming very irritated and as he walked off he said to another guy “That's not the kind of missions MY team does...that's Disaster Relief and completely different.”
I have no idea what I did to irritate this gentleman so much, but leave it to me.
LOL! Center of the universe indeed. Since he wasn’t interested in Disaster Relief anyway, 2J, I wouldn’t give it another thought. That’s terrific that you’re willing to take on the job of getting a group together. That’s something that guy hadn’t even bothered to do, he only wanted to complain that you beat him to the punch. ;o)
Heh... Mr Center of the Universe indeed!
Good morning everyone! We had a pretty good weekend... quietly productive, I think, but not much to write home about. Ah well.
