My clients lie to me constantly on the phone. Sometimes it's because they don't want to seem ignorant, other times it's because of their departmental culture. They lie about the least little thing, and it's the "least little thing" that is usually the solution to the problem.

I can't go by body language or facial expression, but there are patterns of evasive answers that tip me off.

You Can Definitely Spot a Liar
Maybe you have good instincts. Or maybe you just have a lot of experience with liars.
Either way, it's pretty hard for someone to pull a fast one on you. You're like a human lie detector.

Heh...when my littlest brother was little, we could always tell if he wasn’t being entirely truthful because he’d walk his index and middle fingers across whatever flat surface happened to be nearby.

In the years I’ve been doing helpdesk type work, very often when I ask questions like “did anything get changed recently?” I can just *see* those walking fingers in my mind’s eye as they’re answering....

Liars always want to add extraneous details to back themselves up. They can’t just shut up. It’s the biggest give away.
