Mostly, it's follow-up on earlier projects. In the case of the M1A, I've tweaked the sling setup a bit. I like the sling overall, but the straps making the front adapter require disassembly in order to get the stock off.
Midwest Industries, again, had what I was looking for. They make a short Picatinny rail that clamps to the gas cylinder of the M14, and a clamp-on sling swivel. Here it is on the M1A, prior to putting on rail guards (no mini cheese grater for me).
Again, nothing touches the barrel itself, so sling pressure should have no bearing on a changing point-of-impact. With everything all back together, and plastic guards on, this is the final result:
Now if that Aimpoint CompM4 would just arrive....
And I finally got around to replacing the low-profile rail guards on my Mossberg 590 forend with some full-profile covers that actually work. These semi-soft Magpul covers are a little hard to put on, but the final results are worth it.
It now feels round, like the handle of a pump shotgun should. And no chance of grated hands.
Does that muzzle brake make the SOCOM loud? OH...BTW...we’ve got the same issue with front grips and slings around here with ARs. We’ve found that the 14” velcro cable straps work really, REALLY well. You can cinch them up and they’re VERY difficult to get loose! But when you need to remove the front grip, you just unwrap it! I’ll try to get a photo of what I’m talking about so you can get a good look. :-)
Awesome 300 ! The SOCOM II is indeed a mini cheese grater ....LOL !
The mods you have made on the SOCOM 16 looks sweet !
I have a Aero commander IR laser designator an Aimpoint Comp M with my ANPVS - 14 snugged up too it for Oh Dark Thirty use. The Aero Commander IR laser is looking for a better place too live and that midwest rail is the key !!!
thanks for the info !!
You did good on that forend on the 590 as well ! Was that the one ya had all the effort with removing the old one ???
Now that is coming together; brownell’s catalog has occupied a treasured place in our home for many years. Being ~ slightly ~ warped, I use color coded paper clips to mark the pages. I know, but it keeps out of trouble elsewhere.
