The Hobbit Hole XXXVI - O! Water cold we may pour at need...

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:48:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I have just enjoyed Immortal Beloved. So did Mrs. Ex. I'm playing (the CD of) the "Emperor" Concerto now.

I stopped on the way home and bought a hummingbird feeder and a second finch feeder. The hummingbird feeder likely won’t go up until tomorrow since i have to make the nectar and let it cool, but the finch feeder is up - they’re already fighting over it. ;-) Which I guess means it’s a success.

I don’t have enough finches to fight over the one I have. I’ve only seen one so far this year.

I have seen three so far, but most of the birds here just perch in the trees, look around for a minute and fly off.

Well...yah...that’s kind of what birds do when there’s no food there to be had...

We have the feeder here but the birds just fight over it, peck each other and rip feathers out, for a few measly handfuls of feed. The squirrels get whatever’s left over.

I had this weird dream that you sent me a fountain pen and all sorts of weird accessories. Like syringes for inserting ink into its cartridge. And I couldn’t make it work and that made me feel guilty.

I blame the thread.

This, too, is what birds do. ;-)

Mornin’, all.

I promise not to push any weird accessories...

Seriously, there are folks who *do* use a syringe and refill cartridges. Me, I think that’s too much trouble when you can get a converter and just fill from the bottle.

But I’m guessing that isn’t your thing, either. ;-)

I’m in a heavily wooded area and up until a week ago, there was a healthy crop of squirrels. The hawks and owls moved in and the squirrels have disappeared. I noticed the same thing last spring and saw both a hawk and an owl make kills in my backyard.

Every year there’s one dominant squirrel that hangs out around the deck and on an oak tree just outside a window. We always give that one a name. Some of the favorites have been Scabby, Scabby II and this year there was one with a beautiful read fur cloak across his shoulders, so with originality we called him, Red.

I fear Red has met his maker.

Yeah, though it is an interesting concept, the little hand-writing I do isn’t worth a fancy pen. But I do think it’s a neat hobby and I’m glad 2J is getting into it with you.

Speaking of weird dreams, I dreamed that it turned out that Tolkien had lived in this mobile home in his later years.

I was thinking, if that’s not motivation for writing, I don’t know what is.

I have *no* idea why or how my subconscious came up with that.
