The whaling industry was so important that all men were asked to take turns on watch to search for whales along the coast. Whale products were important to many adjacent industries, including shipbuilding and the manufacture of sails and cordage.

But whaling was the most important and profitable industry before electricity arrived. Even Benjamin Franklin is said to have invented the whale oil lamp, a two-wick system that saved oil while providing more light, and the candles were smokeless.
