Word For The Day, Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - semelparous
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 04/16/2008

Posted on 04/16/2008 4:17:50 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

semelparous • \seh-MEL-puh-rus\ • adjective

reproducing or breeding only once in a lifetime

Example sentence:

Each year the semelparous salmon return to the stream where they hatched to spawn, and they die soon thereafter.

Did you know?
The combining form "-parous" was first used in English by the 17th-century physician and writer Sir Thomas Browne, who wrote about organisms that were "multiparous" ("producing more than one at a birth"), "oviparous" ("producing eggs that develop outside the maternal body"), and "viviparous" ("producing living young instead of eggs from within the body"). The suffix is based on the Latin verb "parere," meaning "to give birth to," which is also a relative of the word that gave us "parent." "Semelparous," the youngest offspring of "-parous," was born in 1954. Its other parent is "semel," the Latin word for "once."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

You’re right, they just don’t sound quite right. It sounded so rehearsed.

You know how in California you can go skiing in the morning, then drive to the beach in the afternoon?

We have the same sort of thing here. You can scrape frost off of your windows in the morning, then cut grass after work.

His dad asked Peter about how he got to ask the question.

Peter told him that the folks at MSNBC asked him what question he wanted to ask.

So when Matthews complained about the smart ass questions, it was the people at MSNBC that permitted the questions to be asked.

i kind of like that, though. i hate having it be hot and hazy first thing in the AM, as it will be later this summer. i like that brisk air with a nip in it, first thing.

Yes, they do look sort of Amish. It’s hard to pinpoint their ages. Two of them look mid 20s or so and the 3rd a bit older, but again it’s hard to tell.

They’re on right now (not sure if it is live or a replay from earlier) Gretchen posed the idea that they sound like many of the woman she has dealt with in her work with battered spouses.

xshub was rampaging about this this AM. understandably, so. he said this is why we have to win the election, no matter what. bc the 3 jagoffs on this panel are all Clinton appointees, and the bear ANIMUS against religion, it is clear.

Word is that many of the red shirted cast members of Star Trek were semelparous if only because they got killed off so quickly. In fact 73% of all Star Trek deaths were among crew members wearing red shirts.

Bummer. I suppose if the Pope came to River City, we’d have trouble finding a place to park downtown, too. As it is, there’s ample space most days.

Someone needs run out of town on a rail. Probably the superintendant.

Wouldn’t surprise me if 90% of the teams here said the Lord’s Prayer in the locker room before a game.

East Brunswick? That takes me back. Route 18, the heaviest traffic I knew as a kid. It was always bumper-to-bumper.
