Why be Conservative? teach me
4/8/08 | Nick W.

Posted on 04/08/2008 7:02:06 AM PDT by njweave

Hi, I'm Nick and I am from Illinois. I'm writing on this page because I have been brought up to be very liberal on every issue dominating the upcoming presidential election. I feel like I kind of been brain washed into thinking this way and have this image of every right-winged supporter to be a redneck, gun crazy racist. Now I know that this is sure as hell not the truth, but the real truth for me is that I really do find it hard to agree with a lot of Republican ideals especially when dealing with illegal immigration and abortion. What I'm asking is for somebody to give me some things that you feel are very positive contributions the GOP makes for our govt. I hate the idea that I'm prejidice against right-winged ideals but I would like to have some direct input from somebody who is conservative and why they choose to be.

Or the other option is just to tear me apart for being a northern liberal...either one i guess is gonna happen haha

Nick

What I'm asking is for somebody to give me some things that you feel are very positive contributions the GOP makes for our govt.

Here's a serious and hopefully substantive answer:

The United States was founded with a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

The premise of your question is backward. Our government was created to serve the needs of the people (i.e.: the country). It was not created to have its needs served by the people that created it. Most, if not all, of our politicians have either forgotten, forsaken, or never learned this simple truth.

The United States government has become the father we never wanted - overbearing, confiscatory, brazen, and stupidly spend-crazy. Instead of performing the tasks it was supposed to take care of, it has branched out into all areas of our lives - daily or otherwise. This corrupts (some might say "perverts") the ideals of liberty this nation was founded on.

So, to cut to the chase, I am conservative because I believe that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people - the government this great nation was founded on - is antithetical to the bloated monstrosity that now demands servitude from its subjects -er, citizens.

Does that help?

I can help you on the abortion issue.
Do you not think it is somewhat of a contradiction that liberals are anti-death penalty and very indignant when babies are accidentally killed by US bombs in Iraq but seem to be so indifferent to a young life snuffed out in the womb?
I can even share some of the qualms the libs have over the death penalty. And mourn for those innocent children killed in Iraq.
But,if you say you value human life, why do you not agonize over third trimester murders aka abortions?

I think he’s just “feeling” instead of “thinking”. He likes to feel we are doing the right thing by providing jobs for those who are trying to make a better life for them and their families. He’s not considering how it is taking away the jobs that our natural born Americans could be doing to provide for our own families.

I do believe in God, but doesn’t God and religion in general preach of the well-being of all humans? If homosexuals can’t get married does that not make them as free as straights? If women shouldn’t be able to be in the work force does that make them free? or when u say humans, do u mean men? I’m not trying to pick a fight, i just want to know how you feel on these subjects.

if i wanted to dig myself a hole, i would of been bashing the right this entire time. I’m just asking questions on your stances on issues today. I’ve just registered to vote and don’t you think i deserve to make a fair judgment of what both sides of the argument have to say? Go ahead and say I’m digging a hole for myself. But at least I’m making a conscious effort to understand what the conservative side has to say.

Abortion is THE quintessential “liberal” issue.

“Liberalism” is, at its basic level, simply defined as using authority to force the responsible and innocent to pay for the consequences of the behaviors of the irresponsible and guilty. Couple this with the fact that the only “freedoms” that they actually support all have to do with sexual behavior.

Abortion is making the MOST innocent human pay for, with its very life, the often irresponsible sexual behavior of another human.

Like most good leftists, when faced with the fact stated above, they will tout the fringe cases of rape, incest, etc to justify the other 99% which fit my definition.

haha thats a good argument. I don't have one personally but I've seen some others in action...i get the picture

The key point is that the fundamental difference between Conservative ideology and liberal ideology is Conservatives believe in the individual over the system.

For example, if you care about the homeless- if you were a liberal, you would petition the government to do something, if you are Conservative, you just do something yourself. IMHO, Liberalism is the ultimate in apathy- the entire premise is to pass the buck on an issue to someone else (ie, the government.)

Conservatives, on the other hand, are about personal responsibility. If you care about the environment, start by cleaning up your own, don't pass the buck to someone else.

Of course, there are always the proverbial 'widows and orphans' of whom, they have no one to care for them- those truly in need. The problem is that Liberalism tries to make everyone a victim of someone and in 'need' that all the help is spread so thin, there is only pittance left to help those truly in need.

One of the other fundamental basis of Conservatism is government as close to the people as possible. This is why the Constitution limits the federal governments role to mostly security, treaties, and trade matters. All of those little things that affect your day to day life are supposed to be handled 'by the States or the people' (10th Amendment.)

Liberals have a bassackwards view of the Constitution- they believe it grants rights, that is incorrect. The Constitution starts with the assumption that our rights are inherent and limits the government's intrusion on those rights...

I could keep going, but this should supply you with the foundational aspects of the differences. All other 'issues' are just build on these foundations.

“Liberalism” uses the reasoning of an 11 yr old girl in every issue -

is this position on this issue “nice” or “mean”, regardless of the long term consequences.

The conservative answer is often considered “mean” because it makes the individual responsible for his own decisions.

Letting illegals in is “nice”, even though the side consequences are devastating to the rest of the country.
