Thank you all so much for your prayers. I’ve got an update. Yesterday, I went in for a blood test. The VA called me this morning and said the blood test shows I have diabetes. Why it never showed up on earlier tests no one knows. Now I have an appointment for tomorrow to pick up “supplies” and learn how to give myself injections. Ouch! Not looking forward at all to this.

JimRob thanks for the Update.

What is your A1c? The A1c is a 90-day average blood glucose reading. The American Diabetes Assoc asserts that a reading of 7.0 in a diabetic indicates diabetes is controlled. I'm curious as to why doctors started you with insulin first, instead of oral medications? There are so many good medications available to control diabetes before moving to insulin injections.

I have Type-2 Diabetes, diagnosed in June 2006. My A1c was 10.4 and the Endocrinologist wanted to start me on injections. I refused and requested oral meds as a beginning. Three months later, with proper diet & exercise and oral medications my A1c had dropped to 4.6 and my oral meds were changed, greatly reduced.

Diet & Exercise are essential to controlling blood glucose. Counting carbs is more important than counting calories. A Diabetic should consume between 45 to 60 carbs per meal. Exercise is the key to opening cells to store sugar as energy, thus lowering blood glucose, without exercise sugar is stored as fat.

After my diagnosis, with proper diet, exercise and meds I've lost 80 pounds. My doctor told me this week it's entirely possible for me to get off meds if my progress continues. My current A1c is 5.4 on the lowest dose of medication.

I'm a Certified Diabetes Educator for Type-2 Diabetes (non-insulin). I highly recommend taking a Diabetes Education Course, if that's available to you. If not, then take a course in Nutrition where you will learn to read nutrition statements and how to alter favorite recipes for a diabetic diet. Of course, I'm more than happy to share what I've learned and what I teach others with you through email. FReepmail me your email address if your interested.

Keeping you and Mrs. JimRob in my prayers!

Thank you, USMC Brat. Guess I am in for an education. don’t even know what an A1c is, much less what mine would be. The only things I’ve learned so far is how to do a blood sugar test and to stay away from sugar and fatty foods.
