Enjoy..They grow up so fast!
GG, I would have loved to go to the pig cook-out! How exciting! Why are you fixing fried chicken, when there’s a BBQ going on?
Thanks for the well wishes and prayers everyone, I am back, I was feeling better a day or so ago, I am sorry I didn’t say anything to anyone... I just needed to step away from FR for a while...
I have also had some issues going on in my personal life too that I am struggling with that I wish not to talk about...
Hope everyone is doing well
ROTF!!! (your son)
My daughter was much like yours. But my son?
When my son was three and still messing himself, I had to imagine him being 30 years old, on the top floor of a beautiful building, at the head of a long executive table, dressed in an Armeni suit, with 20 other executives, grunting, with his face turning red. I would burst out laughing, and then say to myself, “This, too, shall pass!”
Believe me when I say, “I know that!”
Boys will be boys. My son is very sucessful now. But there were times that I thought, he will never grow up.
The pig pickin’ is great. The food is the best. Fresh pork cooked and seasoned to a turn, slaw, beans and hushpuppies. Alas, I am about bbq’d out. The FFA members and alumni always run the drive thru, and in return, we get a nice donation. FFA also does their own bbq in the fall, around Veteran’s Day. The whole hog is slow cooked on thegrill, then pulled and chopped. Wish I could send you some!
One of the old guys said, “Wouldn’t due to be a pig or a chicken around here when somebody gets sick.” He’s right. That’s what everyone does for just about every benefit nowadays. There are some great cooks around here—I’ve jsut helped until I can’t hardly stand the smell of bbq. Had to work today but hubby and #2 son worked the drive thru in the pouring rain. They had bbq for lunch. The fried chicken was very good! How was yours?! LOL
Much more than just a bbq. They take over the town park Fri aft, get their tents and cookers set up. There’s a live band, rides and it’s fun to just walk around. Some of the cooks participate in showmanship, which means they decorate their tents. Unbelievable what some of them do. The contestants get the pig about 9:00 pm. They start preparing it, doing whatever and adding their secret sauce or whatever. They cook all night, judging is done in the am, and the pigs are chopped and served. You can eat at the park or you can take out.
The girl I work with has 2 boys who are excellent cooks. One is 17, the other 12ish. Last year, they placed in the top 10 for the youngest and top 20 for the oldest out of 80 some contestents. This year they were in the 40’s. Depends on the pig you got and the judges. The skin has to be crisp without being burnt, and a lot of other piddly details that have nothing to do with the taste. It was very humid and rained early this am so it probably messed up the skin quite a bit as far as being crisp.
I think hubby said they served over 3000 plates at the drive thru.
Glad you’re feeling better! Sometimes I wonder how I ever survied those days, and yet they’re gone in a blink.
Poet Gal, I am still praying for you. All moms need prayers - especially when they don’t feel well, and neither does their little one.
I searched and searched yesterday for a prayer, inspiration or poem, for Moms that need hugs. Couldn’t find the right one - but that doesn’t mean I’m not thinking of you. Take care, dear friend.
You two are too funny! My daughter was the same way—do it meself! My boys.... I can see my guys at the head of the table...
Here’s a quick one I remember form when mine were little
Cobwebs be quiet, dust go to sleep, for I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep. Cleaning and scrubbing can wait til tommorrow, for babies grow up, we’ve learned to our sorrow.
GG, when I realized you weren’t going to be able to make it for dinner, I decided to make chicken and dumplin’s instead. I’m chomping away on it as we speak. Yummmm.
BUT. I would have absolutely loved the BBQ! I guess I can understand why one could get tired of pulled BBQ pork, but that hasn’t happened to me, yet! I should try to get out there next year for all the good eatin’s and fun!
Oh, I love that poem! It’s going in ‘favorites’.
I remember seeing George Hamilton’s mother on one of the morning shows - the moderator asked her how old she was - (IIRC, it was Diane Sawyer.) Then, the moderator said, “Oh, I’m sorry, Mrs. Hamilton! I know it’s not polite to ask a woman her age!”
Mrs Hamilton then replied, “Oh, dear! Don’t worry about that! You can’t lie about your age, when your son needs a face lift!”
One of the best one-liners ever!
One day we are worried about potty training them, and then all of a sudden, we take another look, and they have gray hair. Sniffffffff.
Ummm. Chicken and dumplings—another favorite! too hot tonight for them.
I think I got the lines backwards on that little poem—doesn’t really matter.
You’re right. Seems like yest I was in poetgal’s shoes, and my baby just turned 18 last month. My daughter is almost 21 and my oldest is almost 27. Doesn’t seem possible. That makes me... Nevermind! LOL
The grandbaby is 13 months—can’t believe that either. We had him yest eve for a bit. We were out in the front yard blowing bubbles. He was walking around saying bubba, bubba, bubba. 3 rat terriorists chasing bubbles and barking for all they were worth. Wish I had a video camera!
My oldest grandbaby is nine! There are four more - younger. I love them all so much!
But - don’t give the kids advice on how to raise them. I done raised mine - now it’s their turn. (I only give advice if they BEG for it.)
“Not my pigs - not my farm”. (I have to keep saying that to myself, as I bite my lip. LOL!)
Oh, dita, I went to your “A Butterfly’s Lesson” link and it doesn’t work. All I get is a Google mail page. :-(
I do too. Except, now that I know where the nest is, I am going to be worrying and fussing over them until I can see that the babies can take care of themselves. I have been out there at least ten times today to check and see if mama is tending the nest. I don't know what I could do if she wasn't, but I just feel better seeing her sitting on her eggs.
I sure am! They are good kids. But I can't possibly be old enough to have grandkids that grown up. I don't "feel" that old, that's for sure.
It looks like she's singing to me.
A future little choir angel. :-)
LOL..She will do fine, I am sure. Hard to resist peeking.
I moved my feeder closer to my sliding door and think my hummingbird flew right by..We’ll see.
**Not my pigs - not my farm.**
Too funny! Ill have to remember that one! That’s as funny as the oneliner a minute ago!
My daughter and hubby are doing a great job—much better than I did with my first. SIL popped the baby’s hand for something and I almost cried. i didn’t say a word. Baby deserved it and they have to learn. i thought—how stupid is that? I popped my kids’ hand and never thought twice about it. Gbaby is different!
If you’re ever in teh area the first weekend in Apr, come on out to the pig pickin. it’s always the first unless Easter falls on that weekend. Love to have you.
